The Angelic Doctor

christ-and-aquinas

Today is the feast day of one of the greatest saints of the Church, and one of the greatest intellects to ever walk this globe: Saint Thomas Aquinas.  Here is an essay on Saint Thomas written by G.K. Chesterton before he wrote his biography of the Dumb Ox.  Amazing what a great mind, and a greater faith, can accomplish in one brief life.

Hi, Non-Catholic Christian brothers. So you think you got the shizzle. Meet Tom. Aquinas. Fairly smart gentleman. Care to debate him? Or, the Polish gentleman in the modern garb. Karol, his Baptismal name. And the oldest of the three, Augie. Really partied hardy back in the day, but cleaned himself up. The boys do love a spirited debate…. Uh, sorry you have to leave so soon…….

Let’s chalk it up to the intercession of St. Thomas, one of my personal favorites. Let’s see what a little faith and reason can do.

Chesterton’s biography of St. Thomas is brilliant. It’s probably my favorite book of Chesterton’s; it’s not often that a journalist writing in his spare time writes a biography that scholars in the field highly recommend.
