For only $25.00 you too can have from the official Obama campaign store a portrait of Fearless Leader with his campaign slogan Forward! Sheesh! If the Obama campaign must steal a Nazi slogan, the least they could do is come up with an updated version of the old Hitler Jugend Vorwarts! Vorwarts!
This gripping scene from Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) reminds us that for the Nazis the slogan Forward was into an abyss.
I am of course not calling Obama a Nazi. The portrait actually reminds me of Socialist Realism of the Soviet Union in the twenties and thirties. Note that Obama is not shown smiling. Instead he is almost scowling and looking off in the distance, heroically determined to overcome his enemies and the enemies of the People. Note also the uplifted head. We are meant to view the portrait not straight on, but rather as if we are looking up at Obama. Finally Obama’s face seems to glow with light. A bit trite as propaganda goes, but I assume the artist wanted to rely upon the tried and true, at least in places like the old Soviet Union if not in America.
