Former South Carolina Governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley gives a good, funny speech at the Al Smith dinner this year. She is obviously gearing up for something, but what? Trump isn’t going any place and neither is Pence. 2024 is a long way away. Both South Carolina Senate seats are occupied by Republicans. She and Trump parted on excellent terms. A mystery, and outside of the Faith I have never cared for mysteries. Ideas?
That was a great speech, especially the bit at the end about the good the Church does. Either she’s exceedingly clever or she’s got some great writers.
Bob-
in Reagan’s footsteps, maybe “yes”?
I remember when she was Governor. I didn’t like her public positions on several issues. She was Democrat-lite. She will run against Trump.
Great talk.
A great speech. I thought many of her lines were very funny, but I was surprised at the muted response to some of her really humorous lines; but I’m sure all present did appreciate her speech. I don’t know about when she was governor of North Carolina, but she did an amazing job at the UN (even though it is a cesspit).
Don Mac. says that she is gearing up, but for what? I don’t really care, but whatever it is, if I lived in the USA, she’d have my vote, even if only because she is a beautiful , strong and intelligent woman. 🙂
Lindsay Graham is 63. The last time he ran, he was held to 55% of the vote in a Republican primary running against a collection limited to state legislators and private citizens. He receives Medicare in July 2020, full Social Security in September 2021. His military pension and congressional pension will commence if it hasn’t already, he’ll have a congressional pension after he leaves office, and I’d wager he has medical benefits and long-term care benefits derived from having been a federal employee for > 25 years. In addition, he’ll have private income from savings and investment. He’s had satisfactory jobs and the only dependent he ever had was his sister and perhaps her children. Not everyone is Robert Byrd and he may have told her the seat will be open in two years.
Art, she would have to change her state residence to SC to run for Graham’s seat. Though a precedent has been set. A women who worked for Sen Thurmond told me, ” We South Carolians expect to see our politicians stay in office till they die.” Graham seems energized. Guess he just couldn’t take the Dems tricks anymore. He wants to do away with anchor baby citizenship, at least according to the news.

Did she change her voting address to New York?

Mark Steyn met Strom Thurmond around about 1999. His account of that meeting is … amusing.
South Carolina’s delegation has 9 members. The median year their tour in Congress began is 2011. Unless someone is abnormally old, they likely aren’t dying in seven or eight years. The median tenure at the beginning of the 107th Congress (Thurmond’s last) was longer — 11 years; most of that delegation had left Congress by 2011.
Art, I stand corrected or rather I don’t know her residency. The Ambassador’s residence was at the Waldorf but a condo now is rented at the UN which is a considerable savings. This was at the request of the Ambassadress
