Obama taps pro-life Catholic for DNC Chair? — Guess again.

“A Pro-Life DNC Chair!”, crows an apparently elated Michael Sean Winters in America, at the news that President-elect Obama has tapped the Virginian governor for DNC chair:

I never thought I would live to see the day. If anyone had any doubts about Barack Obama’s willingness to listen to pro-life Democrats, his selection of Virginia Governor Tim Kaine to head the Democratic National Committee should settle those doubts. Obama means business.

Perhaps, perhaps not.

From Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS): Tom Daschle to Communications Director Ellen Moran to Secretary of State: Hillary Clinton, Obama has assembled one of the most militantly pro-abortion cabinets in American history. IF Winters is right about Tim Kaine’s pro-life bona-fides, I suppose we can count this as Obama’s tossing a bone to those gullible pro-lifers.

Then again, there may be justifiable reason to doubt Tim Kaine is even solidly “pro-life”. According to Winters:

Kaine is also pro-life. There are those in the GOP who will contest the point. They correctly point out that Kaine said during his campaign that he would enforce the law and the law is Roe v. Wade. Of course, this was a mere statement of fact. The Governor of Virginia, like the Governor of any other state, must abide by the laws of the United States. We fought a great and terrible civil war, much of it on the soil of Virginia, on precisely this point.

But what Kaine actually said about Roe v. Wade was:

When asked if he’d like to see the Supreme Court overturn Roe the Governor answered, “I don’t think the Supreme Court should.” He continued, “Roe vs. Wade is ultimately about saying that there is a realm of personal liberty for people to make this decision.”

While saying that he supports Roe and that he does not want to criminalize abortion, Kaine voiced support for three abortion restrictions.

He backs a parental consent law in Virginia which has a judicial bypass. He supports a ban on “partial birth abortions so long as there is an exception for the life and health of the mother”. The Obama vice presidential prospect also favors an “informed consent provision” in Virginia which requires abortion providers to “give women information about a whole series of things, the health consequences, et cetera, and information about adoption.”

“Those, I have supported,” said Kaine. “But I don’t think ultimately we ought to be criminalizing abortion.”

Sorry Michael, but proclaiming one’s support of Roe v. Wade as a defense of “the realm of personal liberty” seems to me a tad more than a “mere statement of fact.”

What Kaine said can be seen here. Indeed, in his own words, he is not in favor of overturning Roe, and should not be counted as a pro-life Catholic.

Here is a politician who straddles the fence like the rest. What he supports has not stopped nor will it stop the killingof the unborn til Roe vs, Wade is gone. Its like claiming to be a little being a “little bit” pregnant.
