Something for the weekend.  In 1963 the Robert Shaw Chorale released an album This Is My Country that had songs from American history.  The above is the Civil War medley for the South and below is the Civil War medley for the North:

 

The armies North and South were singing armies:  patriotic songs, humorous songs, off color ditties, ballads, nonsense songs, hymns, all were routinely belted out in camps.  Prior to battles when the armies were close together it was not unusual for the bands in each armies to begin playing the night before a battle, with the soldiers yelling requests.  On one occasion the bands in both armies ended such an impromptu concert with Home Sweet Home, bringing many a tough soldier to tears.
