PopeWatch: Defend the Truth

VATICAN-POPE-AUDIENCE

Well, Father Z notes that  the gauntlet has been well and truly cast down:

Card. Burke has now offered a bit more on that response.  Mind you, there was nothing wrong with his response, other than the fact that he responded to a hypothetical, which, as I mentioned before, is a dicey move.

At CNA we find this:

What Cardinal Burke really said about ‘resisting’ Pope Francis

Cardinal Raymond Burke said he was “responding to a hypothetical situation” when he stated that he would resist any possible move by Pope Francis away from Catholic doctrine.

“I simply affirmed that it is always my sacred duty to defend the truth of the Church’s teaching and discipline regarding marriage,” Cardinal Burke told CNA Feb. 9.

“No authority can absolve me from that responsibility, and, therefore, if any authority, even the highest authority, were to deny that truth or act contrary to it, I would be obliged to resist, in fidelity to my responsibility before God.”

[…]

That’s it.  He has made clearer – for the less agile of mind and for the muckrackers – what he said.

I, however, am still waiting for those professional and perennial Pope resistors at Fishwrap to embrace Card. Burke as their new model.

Go here to read the rest.  All those who wish to transform the Church into an Anglican Church writ large are now on notice that they will be in for a fight.

1st Epistle of St. Peter chpt. 3:14-17; But if also you suffer anything for justice’ sake, blessed are ye. And be not afraid of their fear, and be not troubled. But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy everyone that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you. But with modesty and fear, having a good conscience: that whereas they speak evil of you, they may be ashamed who falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better doing well ( if such be the will of God ) to suffer, than doing ill.

Cardinal Raymond Burke is in good hands. His conversation with Christ I do trust.

Maybe Cardinal Burke is in the position of St Paul correcting St Peter.

More Catholic’s would remarry in the catholic church again if the church didn’t charge so much for annulment’s. I would be one of those Catholic’s. I was abused in my first marriage and got divorced and later remarried another catholic man who’s wife cheated on him and had a baby by another man. We are being punished for something we didn’t do but can’t afford the cost of two annulments.
We would love to be remarried in our old church. I wish someone would help with lowering the cost. I would also love to belong to a church again but what’s the use of going if were both going to go to hell for being divorced. God does know that were both good people its hard to believe that he will send us to the fires of hell for something that was beyond our control.

Doris,
.
God will not punish you because your former spouse abused you, nor will God punish the man with whom you are currently living for his former spouse’s adultery. But what we do get punished for is our own individual sins, the commission of which we can control, for example, adultery. It is adultery to have been validly married and then remarry. Furthermore, annulment is not divorce but a declaration that the previous marriage was null and void. The specific circumstances of yourself and the man with whom you are currently living would have to be considered by a Tribunal for the declaration of nullity.
.
Now all that said, I am in complete agreement with you about the cost of the annulment process. However, the process is not free and it has to be paid somehow. What suggestions are there to mitigate cost impact on those requesting annulment but for whom the price is beyond their economic means?
.
Lastly, I am making no declaration as to the invalidity of any previous marriage, nor of the validity of your current marriage. I am not competent to answer such questions, nor am I the appropriate authority. I just re-iterate: we do not get punished for someone else’s sins, only our own and I have many which merit my death (but then again, all sin merits deaths).
