You hick! I’ll be back pulling strings to get guys elected mayor and governor before you ever get a 10-buck raise. Yeah, how many of those guys in office owe everything to me. I made them. Yeah, I made ’em, just like a — like a tailor makes a suit of clothes. I take a nobody, see? Teach him what to say. Get his name in the papers and pay for his campaign expenses. Dish out a lotta groceries and coal. Get my boys to bring the voters out. And then count the votes over and over again till they added up right and he was elected.
Johnny Rocco, Key Largo (1948)
During the Presidential Election post game in 2000, PopeWatch treasured the scene below from the movie Key Largo:
Gangster Johnny Rocco, Edward G. Robinson, explains how he made Florida politicians, having “his boys” count the votes in elections and keep counting until the vote came out right. From a recent interview of Cardinal Maradiaga, a similar mindset exists among supporters of communion for Catholics in adulterous marriages. Father Z gives us the details:
At the Italian site Nuova Bussola, we find the observations of Oscar Card. Rodriguez Maradiaga about the possibility of Communion for the divorced and remarried.
Impossible? “No!”, says the Cardinal.
And if the upcoming Synod rejects the proposal, the Kasperite Solution, hey!… maybe there could be a third synod on the question!
And His Eminence seems to be putting a great deal of stock in polls.
I’m in my car in a parking lot, so I can’t do the translation at the time of this posting.
Ongoing synods until the desired result is obtained?
Go here to read the comments. Some of the powers that be in the Vatican would have fit right in with Johnny Rocco’s mob.
Gambling in Rick’s? I’m shocked. Actually, not so much. If Rick hasn’t figured out that his help is running a casino right under his nose, then I guess we all know who to blame.
Heck, why doesn’t he just stock the next synod’s lunch cart with forbidden apples and be done with it?
If you didn’t see that coming, you haven’t been watching mainline Protestantism over the last forty years. This is the Leftists’ playbook. And it works like a charm.
The Pope will keep stacking the deck with Kasperites and the “proper” result will eventually be reached. Then they’ll move on to expanding the divorce indult, recognizing gay relationships, etc.
“And it works like a charm.”
Short term yes, long term no. The churches embracing leftism instead of Christianity rapidly devolve into shadows of themselves, with orthodox factions splitting off. The process we are going through now is actually the destruction of liberal Christianity rather than the destruction of Christianity.
aha! waal i’ll be a pie eyed optimist right with you ! 🙂
I watched Key Largo yesterday. Johnny Rocco’s lies were not bought and he died a very embarrassing death. but then, Johnny Rocco lived a very embarrassing life. I did appreciate Edward G. Robinson’s acting talent. Robinson portrayed the best bad guy I ever saw. Humphrey Bogart was good too. I liked the way Bogart and the script allayed Johnny Rocco’s evil vents. Evil lost in the end.
Frighteningly accurate. They be as fools on horseback riding to hell. Do they even believe in God?
One more vote for Dale.

Cardinal Rodriguez has lost more than half of formerly Catholic Honduras to Evangelicalism. For this, the Roman Pontiff puts him in the Roman Pontiff’s inner circle.
Cardinal Rodriguez would do well to remember Saint John Chrysostom’s admonishment.
So, just who are the “world rulers of this present darkness?” [Ephesians re putting on the full armor of God]. And I was thinking it was our Pres’s puppetmasters. Guy McClung, San Antonio
