Messianic Prophecies: Zechariah 14: 1-5

Finishing our Advent look at Messianic prophecies for this year, a series which we began in Advent 2011 and continued in 2102, 2013 and 2014, the earlier posts of the series may be read here, here, here ,here, here, here, here, here , here ,  here, here, here, here , here, here, here , here,   here, here,  here, here, and here we come to Zechariah 14: 1-5:

[1] Behold the days of the Lord shall come, and thy spoils shall be divided in the midst of thee. [2] And I will gather all nations to Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken, and the houses shall be rifled, and the women shall be defiled: and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the rest of the people shall not be taken away out of the city. [3] Then the Lord shall go forth, and shall fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. [4] And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is over against Jerusalem toward the east: and the mount of Olives shall be divided in the midst thereof to the east, and to the west with a very great opening, and half of the mountain shall be separated to the north, and half thereof to the south. [5] And you shall flee to the valley of those mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall be joined even to the next, and you shall flee as you fled from the face of the earthquake in the days of Ozias king of Juda: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with him.

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem saw in this passage a prophecy of the entry of Christ into Jerusalem:

11. But He might perchance even sit upon a foal: give us rather a sign, where the King that enters shall stand. And give the sign not far from the city, that it may not be unknown to us: and give us the sign plain before our eyes, that even when in the city we may behold the place. And the Prophet again makes answer, saying: And His feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives which is before Jerusalem on the east. Does any one standing within the city fail to behold the place?

to me this passage speaks of the time around 70 AD when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans. This sounds exactly like what happened in those days. So often with Biblical Prophecy people even highly educated ones try to read to much into things that have been said. Is this passage prophetic? yes but not for our time necessarily.
Some of it can be construed as fitting what is happening today. There are certainly enough nations gathering to destroy Israel (including our own unfortunately). There are very few true Kings left in the world most of them are only ceremonial in nature.
What is more important is that the Israelites are gathering more and more in Israel. There are a lot of signs just as Jesus said there would be but we no longer have Magi that can explain the heavens to us. We have astronomers but they don’t necessarily look at the heavens from Biblical or Gods point of view. Everything He said has come to pass. He said look to the heavens The moon, the sun, the stars and look at the earth: there will be diseases, famines, earthquakes, and wars everywhere. Well we just finished two years of Red Blood Moons occurring on the two holiest days for the Israelites they are important because 1. the mark the Exodus from slavery in Egypt so the beginning to the return to Israel. 2. Feast of the Tabernacles which marks the end of the journey from slavery in Egypt. In between those Lunar (moon) were solar eclipses some full some partial. So there is the Moon and the Sun speaking. Then June 2015 (it took all of it and most of July for it to wain) the Star of Betlehem returned after 2000 years and if you were out in a deserted area you could actually see how bright it was. So now the Stars (planets) have spoken. The Earth: Well what isn’t happening to the earth and the people on it. Wars are everywhere and ISIS is bringing it closer to Israel. Diseases gee just count them all especially Ebola! And one more thing He said was there would be little to no Faith left on Earth. Well we hit the jack pot on that one!
Does this help us predict His return- NO! it just helps to remind us that we should be ready. Should we be scared? Not if we believe in Him and Trust Him then No! But we should be praying for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not Hope, and do not love Him!
