Politics Open Thread

The most hilarious feature in the above video is the idea that Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are sleeping together.  Lots of political news, all of it unedifying.  We have Trump from 2005 talking to Billy Bush, yes a scion of that Bush family, braying about his attempt to physically seduce a married woman.  Trump is a pig about women?  Who knew?  Then we have hacks of Hillary’s three speeches to Goldman Sachs, for which she was paid $675,000 for slightly more than three hours of speechmaking, hitherto kept secret, back in 2013 where we learn, to our stupified amazement, that she says one thing in public and one thing in private as a matter of policy, and that she believes in utopian schemes, such as having a common market for North and South America powered by green energy.

Too much going on in the law mines today for me to do more than note all this in passing.  This open thread is your opportunity to comment on the political scene.  As usual, be concise, be charitable and, above all, be amusing!

The Simpsons TV show is in its 27th year! This tells me much about the times and the morals and helps explain the Obama and Clinton phenomena.
.
A corrupt, incompetent sociopath Hillary presidency will be a disaster. Brace yourselves.
.
Latest, the Hillary campaign employees/media liars (I repeat myself again) and GOP traitors (like Ryan) are trashing Trump because of a locker room brag fest. They ignore Hillary destroying a 11-year-old rape victim (she wasn’t a virgin anyhow); her trashing (war room “nut s and sluts”, killing Juanita Broadwith’s dog and throwing it on her door, . . . ) of Willie’s rape victims, the unnecessary and unconstitutional proxy wars and the hells she let loose in the Middle East and North Africa, arming and growing ISIS, felonious email scandals, pay-for-play, Benghazi, the list goes on and on and on.

Even the conservative media (of which we have very few) are trashing Trump for his latest lewd offensive bash fest of women. But no one will give a second thought to Hillary’s compliance with Bill’s savagery against women. LOL…….he rapes them and then Hillary threatens his victims?………..and not one media outlet says a word. ‘Partners in Crime’ is what we will no doubt have in the White House come November. Your absolutely correct T. Shaw……….brace yourselves for the death of America, the diabolical duo rides again.

I recall the words of one woman who most likely will support HC. She made a video talking about her abortion; “…it kind of tickles when it is happening.”

In that context, we can damn well assume that the gates of hell have opened and hell itself is emptying out upon the world.

Hillary Clinton and her popularity in the face of all the scandals is just another proof of my assertion.

Buck up!
The fight is on!

Everything that needs to be known about a Democrat is in this Simpsons video….
They pretend that all is well with Hillary and Bill, the only problem is he wants to still be in charge. Forget and completely ignore her homosexual life, her morals, and her misdeeds, (oh yeah, and her health).
Also, imagine the worse Trump…
Democrats live in the land of imagination, willing ignorance, and denial..

As unfit as all these people are for the presidency, here is the equally unfit Pope Francis insinuating from a sculpture that Christ somehow saved Judas in the very end…from last week’s plane interview…unbelievable for anyone who knows Christ’s repeatedly dire words on Judas…this is the Pope of 1.2 billion Catholics:

“Mercy has the last word. I like to tell, I do not know if I told you, because I repeat it so much … in the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena – I told you or no? – There is a beautiful capital, but it is more or less from the thirteenth century. Medieval cathedrals were catechesis with sculptures. And in a part of the capital there is Judas hanged with his tongue out and eyes (bulging) out, and on the other side of the capital there is Jesus the Good Shepherd who takes (Judas) and carries him with him. And if you look closely, the face of Jesus, the lips of Jesus are sad on the one hand, but with a small smile of understanding in the other. They understood what mercy is … with Judas, huh! “

Coincidentally, I’ve been listening to Dan Carlin’s Hardcore history series about the Persian Empire at the same time as I’m re-reading 1 Ezra and Haggai. I’m pretty sure the Jews weren’t under any illusions as to the personal virtues of Cyrus and Darius, yet these often-brutal emperors earned their admiration for allowing them to return to Jerusalem and providing them with the means to rebuild and re-furnish the Temple.

John Zmirak wrote an article the other day comparing Trump to Constantine (and looking aroundi see that others have made the same linkage), but perhaps the Old Testament parallels are just as apt.

Michael,
.
The problem with the 2020 strategy is i) a substantial chunk of former Republican voters will not vote for another Establishment stiff in their lifetimes, and ii) even if the GOP does lure those voters back, the demographic changes wrought by President Clinton’s open-borders policies will make it all but impossible for conservative candidates to win elections. Immigrants overwhelmingly vote en bloc for the left, even over generations, and the changing nature of the polity week drag the GOP ever further in that direction.

In the spirit of so-called misogyny: “Hillary is the smartest woman on the planet,” which is an insult to women. The smartest woman couldn’t pass the Washington, DC bar exam. She passed the Arkansas bar behind closed doors with two ringers assisting. Double standard much?
.
All we hear are reasons against voting for Trump. We never hear a reason to vote for Hillary. The wholly-owned-by-Hillary-2016 media 24/7 distort, distract, exaggerate, fabricate, misrepresent, omit (hundreds of pieces of evidence of her crimes, fiascoes, and lies), repeat, repeat, repeat.
.
I know sociopath Hillary’s corruption and incompetence. Ergo I’m (holding my nose) 100% for Trump despite the horrid tape and hundreds of trivial distractions. Hillary is far, far worse.

Murray, I agree. Michael, in 2020 there will be nothing left.
.
Not to worry. We live in a vale of tears and our true home is not of this world; but we hope to have it “after this our exile.”
.
Further thoughts on this 11 year-old private tape: They needed a distraction. Late yesterday, hundreds of additional Hillary felony emails were released. Hillary 2016 paid-employees, a.k.a. the media, are going nuts over this trivia, which bears no relation to the media-ignored/covered up crises/ticking time bombs confronting the American people.

I think Trump should be outed for his gross language about women and don’t support it for an instant. However, in the real world, this is common talk in locker rooms, bars and other places where many men, full of macho bravado among their mates brag about their conquests and fetishes. My wife, who works with a bunch of women, tells me that the talk in their lunch room is not much better.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in an alternative universe. For as long as men have attempted to seduce women and women the same to men, this type of low grade braggadocio will continue if they think their peers will consider them “cool”.

Don the Kiwi is right. Having been a nuclear submarine sailor, I was willingly part and parcel of the worst of sexual perversion to come from the mouth of mortal man. Nevertheless, that kind of talk recorded on video and publicized now spells doom for Trump’s candidacy.

My political bullets…
* – Hearing Trump is a bully and objectifies women is one thing. Hearing the evidence, the actual words come from his mouth, is another. Trump cannot drop any points. He just did.
* – The Democrats are not done. More to come on Trump.
* – This will hurt the GOP to the delight of the Trumpsters.
* – Thinking you can defuse this bomb with Bill’s past behaviors is foolish. Not going to defuse and not going to win an election on this.
* – Continually bringing up Bill’s past will not win votes either. People want to be over that, and most have a sympathetic eye toward Hillary in this matter. This perception will not change unless there’s evidence of Hillary arranging meetings between Bill and his victims.
* – Content of a candidate’s character was down for the count. This election season the “never been more conservative” GOP drove a stake through its heart.
* – Thank you America for nominating these people and bringing the election of the next president down to the level of a Jerry Springer show. “Aw! No you din’dt!”
* – As Erick Erickson has been asking, if Donald Trump were running to help Clinton become president, what would he be doing differently?
* – Trump will not “mop” the floor with Hillary next debate because a) he’s not competent or principled enough to do it right, b) he just got neutered.
* – We should start our conservative winners/losers list now. Winners: Ben Shapiro (Did you see his epic pro-life argument?), Steve Deace, Erick Erickson, Mike Lee, Matt Walsh. Losers: Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, Ann Coulter (Ok, she’s been a loser.). Tempted to add Ted Cruz to loser list, but way too early for that.
* – The email leaks from Wikileaks, e.g. the Podesta crimes, will have nearly zero, if not zero, impact on Hillary.

Dunno. I worked in an office where the women were middle aged and married and yapped about Bed, Bath, and Beyond; their children; the granular features of our fringe benefits; troublesome elderly relatives; girl time with sister/mother/galpal; the Daily Dilbert (which half the time seemed to be satirizing the department manager); and their husbands (whom they were commonly irritated with or laughing at).

Classic case where the Republican is driven out of town for saying things that Democrats do without compunction or consequence.
Pathetic that conservatives & repubs are piling on. Hillary must be thrilled they are doing for her better than she could have done herself. I guess this is the media’s revenge for Trump’s press conference they were so furious about. But they did one better- they tricked the truly stupid holier-than-thou repubs, so happy that they were asked their opinion, to shoot their own guy. On second thought they didn’t need any tricking. Yeah, I don’t talk like this about women, and none of the men I know do either. What little I’ve seen of Trump’s remarks is pretty disgusting, so I’m not inclined to jump on the boys-will-be-boys bandwagon.
.
Having said that, Russia is moving late-model anti-aircraft guns into Syria and is threatening to respond to American intervention with force, Libya is a disaster area due to a US-led intervention, Europe is facing growing social instability, Deutsche Bank may be on the verge of precipitating a new worldwide economic crisis, the economy has grown incredibly weakly since 2008, race riots are flaring up on a regular basis, there’s a groundswell of discontent with the direction of the country, immigration threatens to irrevocably transform the character of American society, the Democratic candidate is transparently a criminal grifter and rape-enabler whose opponents have an odd habit of turning up dead … and the Great World Power is transfixed by a vulgar conversation between two guys 11 years ago. Nothing is as likely to embolden the Russians and the Chinese (and the North Koreans, and the Iranians, and, and, and) as the spectacle of the world’s most powerful nation demonstrating that it is wholly unserious.
.
To put it another way, Ted Kennedy killed a woman and was known as the Lion of the Senate. John McCain called his wife a c*** in front of reporters and suffered no serious consequences. Bill Clinton … well. But by all means, let’s confect some outrage! over a stupid private conversation.
.
In a perverse way, I’m actually looking forward to the next Clinton presidency. Within mere weeks of Inauguration Day, millions of Americans will suddenly remember why they were so glad to see the back of this sleazy crowd last time. And I suspect, in my more optimistic moments, that Hillary will be so busy dealing with leaks and investigations and geopolitical provocations that she simply won’t have the time or energy to really do too much damage.

Is there a specific clip of Donald saying something to the level of the recently published recording or worse? I heard snippets of the 45 minutes. Nothing earth shattering. People are not surprised to hear raunch on Howard Stern show. They are surprised when they hear someone speak the way he did in a natural setting.
This has been the prediction all along in regard to Trump, that he would hurt downballot GOP candidates. Thus far that has not been the case.
Because those running keep an arm length’s away. The depth of damage will be known Nov 9 and after.
If Trump is to be held accountable for his words why shouldn’t Bill Clinton, and his accessory Hillary Clinton, be held accountable for his actions which include rape?
There is plenty of evidence that Hillary directed a campaign of character assassination against women that Bill preyed upon.

Bill Clinton is not running. He’s already been impeached, i.e. paid a price. There is no evidence Hillary arranged Bill’s affairs. Whatever Hillary said about Bill’s victims are the words of a wife cheated on and trying to cope with the betrayal. It was acts made out of anger and desperation.
Not saying I believe any of it, but that’s how a significant portion of the public will see it.
What total crap. Trump got more votes in the primaries largely due to an influx of Democrats and Independents. Trump was never the candidate of GOP conservatives.
The only thing you say that is true is Trump not being the choice of the conservative GOP, which is a minority. The rest, as you would say, is total crap. Believing Trump expanded GOP membership is like believing a liberal pope will fill the pews.
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/05/donald-trump-2016-polling-turnout-early-voting-data-213897
Well at least Trump has not been dumb enough to take political advice from Erickson who gives new depth of meaning to the phrase “fatuous blowhard”.
Specifics.
I would suggest waiting to compile such lists until November 9.
Even if Trump wins, the winners have been on the money about Trump and entirely consistent. The losers will have Trumpisms around their neck for the next 4 years.
The steady drip, drip, drip on Clinton’s integrity has kept the race close, and will keep Democrat turnout down.
Too many in the general public see the news about Clinton as politically wrangling. Even if true, just proves politicians are corrupt. Trump is corrupt too. So the news about Hillary is noise. But did you hear Trump used carryover losses on his tax return?! This is how they think.
It’ll be interesting to see if Trump can put Hillary on her heels with her scandals. He missed a huge opportunity last debate. I think it’ll be harder to do this time in the town hall setting unless he knows how to deliver. Make it feel like a one on one answer, explain why such corruption is dangerous, make it personal.

Let us hear something uplifting from Fr. Rutler

FROM THE PASTOR
October 9, 2016
by Fr. George W. Rutler

Of all wars, the most vicious are civil wars and religious wars. Family and Faith are the two most intimate and transcendent elements of civilization, and when they are disrupted, the reaction is more volatile than any fracture over economics or territory. The conflict in our country from 1861 to 1865 divided brother from brother and cut psychological wounds nastier than the passions of the 1776 revolution. The clash between religions at the partitioning of India in 1947 was far more sanguinary than insurrections during the Raj.

Some of the basest human behavior sullies organized combat, but those conflicts also shape high valor. That was how the French Revolution was summed up in A Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way.”

The cynic sneers at the notion of heroism because he thinks that there is no light to be shed in a world that is all darkness. He logically concludes from that false premise that darkness is not dark because there is no light as its contrast, and nothing matters since there is nothing other than matter. But there are heroes, and they shed light in dark times. Valor defies villainy.

As one example, Lt. j.g. Aloysius H. Schmitt, a Catholic priest from a farm family in Iowa, was a chaplain at Pearl Harbor on the USS Oklahoma on December 7, 1941. Having been pulled out of a porthole where he had been stuck, he positioned himself for certain death in order to help crewmen to safety, blessing each one. This past month, enhanced DNA technology identified what remains of his bones. Previously his corroded chalice had been recovered along with his waterlogged Latin Breviary open to the Eighth Psalm: “Domine, Dominus noster, quam admirabile est nomen tuum in universa terra! O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name throughout all the earth!” On October 8 his remains were buried with those of his parents.

The most titanic war is the spiritual battle fought every day in each soul, even though it is commonly upstaged by the lesser fights over boundaries and politics that make the newspaper headlines. In that spiritual combat, “The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never overcome it.” While no one wants to live in dark times, the Light of Christ is never brighter and more wonderfully blinding than when the nations live in shadows and human hearts are dark.

It’s been a feature of mass entertainment for 40-odd years (perhaps since the song ‘Eve of Destruction’ hit the charts) to denigrate conventional virtues. The social work and mental health trade have been on board with this, as has the academic community, school administration, and the news media. Those of us reading the papers in 1998 saw ourselves trashed by the likes of Molly Ivins and Jonathan Alter for lacking ‘class’ for thinking public officials should not be people who engage in acts of gross indecency and are known to have done so. Well, you trash conventional virtues, eventually you get what we’ve got, Peter Viereck called it in 1949 when he said the liberal is benign; it’s his grandson that’s the horror.

And, of course, it’s replicated in conduct down the line. The IRS mess and the Benghazi mess, and the Hillary mess are astonishing in context. In 1971, Henry Peterson, a career man (and registered Democrat) who had been placed in charge of the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice (by John Mitchell) told John Dean that in his 20+ years in the division, no criminal investigation had ever been scotched at the instruction of the White House, and that if the President and John Ehrlichman tried, “the lawyers in this division would walk out”. Robert Bork’s arguments against the special prosecutor law were derived from his understanding of the divisions at the Department of Justice gleaned from his years as Solicitor-General (1973-77). Also around 1971, the commissioner of Internal Revenue informed the White House that there would be no audits of their political enemies. And in 1974, Barber Conable, then the fourth ranking Republican in the House leadership, said he would cast a vote for the 1st article of impeachment because, “I do not favor leaders who mislead”. Henry Peterson, Randolph Thrower, and Barber Conable were born in 1920, 1913, and 1922 respectively. James Comey, John Koskinen, and Elijah Cummings were born in 1960, 1939, and 1951. We used to be better than we are.

Trump’s comments will not hurt one bit the support he gets from most if not nearly all of his supporters. Undecideds are another story, but there is plenty of more stuff on the Hildebeast to damage her whether or not the media talks about it. I am far more incensed at the Washington Compost and the Bush family, which proved that they are again partners in crime with the Clintons. Some Compost writer took Trump’s words about herion being poison and twisted it to say that Trump called immigrants poison. He was called out repeatedly before changing his story. Go see it on Breitbart.

The rage the Trumpsters have against the GOPe, the Democrats (the Uniparty), the media, Hollywood and the Crony Capitalists is growing. Can’t say I blame them.

I guess you missed the part about walking back stage to observe nude beauty contestants, or how it was his duty to sleep with them if they requested
And the general public expect no less kind of talk on a show like on a show like Howard Stern. Doesn’t make it right, but also not surprising.
Will you admit that you are wrong if the GOP keeps both chambers of Congress?
If they keep both chambers, I still say pushing Trump hurt the brand. The establishment will use as opportunity to save the party. And if they keep both chambers, it kind of goes against the Brexit theory. Voters are comfortable with status quo?
The Politico article you cite is purest bunk.
Calling something “crap,” “bunk,” or “specious” does not make it any less true. Provide data to the contrary. Voter registration numbers help, but registrations does not mean votes. (It’s understandable for Trump TV, aka Fox News, to hang its hopes on this.) This registration story has been discussed since the beginning of the year with no definitive reason as to why.
.
If you read the article I sent, they provide what are called facts, i.e. numbers about votes.
Iowa — 50% increase voting. 95% of them had voted previously, i.e. not new. 80% had voted in last 3 of 4 primaries.
South Carolina — Record turn out. Only 8.4% new GOP voters. Record turnout created by swell of GOP registrants who never voted in primary before.
Ohio — Nearly doubled the primary turnout. 92% of those voters had voted in one of 3 previous elections.
.
No doubt Trump is bringing on new voters, but not nearly the amount he claims. And not a tidal wave pushing him to nomination. He won a lot of winner take all states with less than a majority of votes.
.
From your Fox News source, In Pennsylvania, Republicans gained 40,000 voters; Democrats lost 178,000.
I guess that means PA is a lock for Trump. Clearly the polls in PA are wrong. RCP Average: Clinton +8.8.
.
Enough do not to make this a close race that Clinton may well still lose.
I will agree Hillary can still lose, especially if they overplay the Trumpisms. Trump campaign best hope is to re-frame the scandals spotlight. “Yes. What Trump did is bad; it’s scandalous, and he has apologized. The American people need to be aware of a far more consequential scandal. Hillary has …” Mention her scandal briefly and quickly follow up with why it’s a problem. It must tie into the importance of the rule of law (Tie this to Obama’s lawlessness after explaining.) or Hillary’s incompetence. Connect the dots for the people. One of Trump’s best moments last debate was connecting the dots between Hillary’s call for more regulations and her life as a career politician. “You’ve had 30 years. Why just now?”

You simply do not want to admit that this was out there and available to anyone who wished to do a cursory search.
Again, context matters. Yes, people knew this stuff existed. He even brags about having affairs with married women in one of his books. He has said lots of salacious things. (This has been discussed for months, even by supposed fatuous blowhards. Not a new discovery anyone has to admit to.) But hearing it come from his mouth in a non-staged setting is different.
No it is very much a change election. If it were not, Trump would not have gotten the nomination and Hillary wouldn’t have almost lost the nomination to a seventy-four year old socialist who doesn’t even identify as a Democrat.
And Obama’s approval rating would not be at highs and Hillary would not have won at all.
The fact that voters in this year GOP primaries had voted in prior general elections says nothing about their previous party id
He did say this up front… the early statistics show that the vast majority of those voters aren’t actually new to voting or to the Republican Party
He provided facts to support both claims. Don’t point at evidence of the former to disprove the latter.
.
Polls for PA are all over the place.
This is all over the place? @Penguin Fan, if you don’t like an average, see the polls below. Count the number of times Trump led and when.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/pa/pennsylvania_trump_vs_clinton_vs_johnson_vs_stein-5964.html#polls
.
This year I rather suspect that general election polls will prove to be largely off the mark in close states
Didn’t we try to convince ourselves of that in previous elections? How did that work out?

Setting aside all the Trumpmania, the real problem for the Republicans is the Republicans themselves who are mostly Democrats dressed up in red. The Republican Party must be rebuilt in a way that will separate it from the Democrats and appeal to the folks who like what Trump says about globalism, immigration, terrorism, income inequality, etc. Call it popular conservatism.

Kyle Miller, I live in Pennsylvania. I don’t need to look at RCP. I don’t care what their averages are. Hildebeast has her support in the heavily populated Philadelphia suburbs and Philadelphia and Allegheny Counties. Usually that is enough to carry the presidential election Democrat. Been that way since 1992. Most of the rest of Pennsylvania can’t stand her, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Oh, and get off your high horse.

the real problem for the Republicans is the Republicans themselves who are mostly Democrats dressed up in red.

No, that’s not the problem, and never has been. There is a quite different nexus of interests at work in the GOP. The real problem with the Washington GOP is that it is the servant of its donors and it’s mentality is craven by default. That does not apply to all Republican members of Congress, but it does apply to the leadership stratum and between one-third and two-thirds of its members. That renders them incapable of accomplishing anything but tossing some candy to salient clients. Look at the hatred for Ted Cruz. What’s driving that? A hypothesis:

1. He’s not dysfunctionally other-directed.
2. He’s has other things he could be doing with his life. He’s not in politics for a career.
3. He reminds them they’re frauds. He need not say anything to remind them they’re frauds

eople reaching for their smelling salts now are either living in a cave or faking their reaction. Everyone knew who Trump was, which is why I opposed him in the primaries.

I suspect the Republicans bailing now have been waiting for an excuse, or are dust in the wind.

Art Deco–

“The real problem with the Washington GOP is that it is the servant of its donors and it’s mentality is craven by default.”

Well said, Deco. My point exactly. These are the same donors who control the craven Democrats. This is how the system gets rigged.

These are the same donors who control the craven Democrats.

No, they aren’t. The Democrats are the party of the teachers’ unions, the trial lawyers, and Hollywood. They’re the party of Steve Sailer’s ‘coalition of the fringes’. They’re the electoral vehicle of the purveyors of our rancid political culture. The Republicans are chock-a-bloc with poltroons who utter platitudes like ‘the court has spoken’.

A good article to read is in the Remnant
Newspaper, Oct. 8 by Michael Matt. The hypocrisy of all this is astounding, especially in a society that promotes adultery, pornography, gay unions, etc., with ‘Hollywood’ taking the lead by promoting these issues.

And we have a problem with the Donald? I am NOT endorsing nor apologizing for his disgusting behavior, but I am not scandalised by it either. These are the candidates we deserve because sadly they reflect who we are as a nation.

Actually the polls were wrong in 2012. Unfortunately almost all of them overestimated Romney’s strength
But the polls showed Obama ahead, barely but ahead. It just misjudged by how much. The RCP average now is not nearly as close. The polls would have to be dramatically off. And it states like PA, not even close.
