The Left Hates US

How then shall we perform it?–At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?– Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never!–All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Abraham Lincoln, January 27, 1838

Dave Griffey at Daffey Thoughts takes a look at the great hate affair that most of the Left has long had with America:

Yes, Virginia, the cat is out of the bag.  It has been for some time.  Most Americans, Christians, and people of sound mind could tell that the radical revolutionaries emerging in the 20th century, and especially the later half of the 20th century, loved Bolshevism, but hated America.

They denied it of course.  In fact, for the longest time, the only real evil was to suggest that those who seemed to hate America in fact hated America.

But those days are gone.  It should be clear to anyone with half a brain that the Left, or most who so identity, think of America with all the affection that Nazis reckoned Jews, or the KKK feels about Blacks.  They hate it.  Some, like Antifa, wear the proclamation as a badge of honor.

To them, from the moment that great villain Columbus came to slaughter and enslave, through the next several centuries, this fledgling civilization all but redefined evil and terror in the world.  Name a sin, and nowhere was it worse than America.  Other countries had their problems, of course.  If they couldn’t be linked to America (or, in deference to the yet to be discovered New World, the Christian West), then it was downplayed, dismissed, or even excused on ‘cultural’ grounds.

But once the first Europeans begin settling east of the Mississippi, true darkness covered the lands, and continued to until the mid-20th century.

So we have this story, told purely from that angle.  It is not a story of a man whose family fled his own country in order to achieve success here, who had to overcome prejudices while becoming one of the most beloved artists of the 20th century that nobody ever heard of (note: most don’t know Disney artists by name other than Uncle Walt).

No, read the tag:

The late Tyrus Wong, whose paintings formed the basis of Disney’s iconic film, is finally receiving the recognition he deserves. Seventy-five years after “Bambi,” Wong is the subject of an “American Masters” film on PBS, a documentary portrait that reveals how he overcame a harrowing immigration process and years of racism in the United States to become one of the most prolific artists in recent memory.

I’ve read stories about Jews fleeing the Nazis that sounded less harrowing.  Nothing positive except his own praiseworthy accomplishments.  It’s as if he did this all despite the unparalleled evils of America, rather than because he came to America.

This is important.  First, to define the entire history of the US as one of history’s great evils, it justifies throwing down everything that was identified with the historic US.  That includes, but is not limited to, a Christian moral framework, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, or any artifact from that era of perpetual midnight.

Go here to read the rest.  Why the hate?  Because this country, with all its flaws, has come the closest to utopia that man has created upon this planet.  Leftists who live here usually understand this deep down, and hate it.  How could this country prosper and be free and usually happy without embracing the nostrums and the crack pot ideas of the Left?  No, this fair land of freedom must be destroyed if the brave new world sought by the Left is to be brought about.  Thus America is attacked unceasingly, with its vices shouted out, vices it has in common with the rest of humanity, while its unique virtues are ignored.  The hatriotism of the Left is a poison in our society, a poison they can dispense due to our freedoms, freedoms which many contemporary Leftists would do away with for their adversaries if they had the power, something they are increasingly attempting to do in the enclaves they control.  Enemies of our country they are also enemies of our freedoms.

Someone recently said the press corps is made up of people who fancy they are better than the places they grew up. Another critic of the media, Tom Wolfe, has offered that the press is made up of people who got knocked around on the playground and want revenge.

Thomas Sowell’s work here is instructive. Vision of the Anointed is, to a degree a polemical transposition of A Conflict of Visions. Reading it, one has many moments of ‘I wish I’d said that” and “Why did not think of that”. Paul Hollander delineated a subtype of the phenomenon in Political Pilgrims, but he did not offer explanations that resonated. Per Sowell, much discourse about public affairs is a self-aggrandizing affair. It’s not so much that they ‘hate America’ as they disdain you. They disdain their grandparents. They disdain your grandparents. The daily life of ordinary wage-earning Americans as they were in 1941 does not interest them. (And, btw, suburban professionals like my grandparents led a notably more uncomfortable and insecure life than their counterparts today). It’s not merely their retrospective takes. The policies of higher ed administrators and the editorial policies of major media make no bloody sense – until you realize that the people who make such policies can only see the country around them by looking at a reflection in a funhouse mirror.

The left hates you and the uses you make of your God-given freedoms.

Trump is President because normal Americans/deplorables awakened to the fact that they are actively hated by Obama, Hillary, the academy, Wall Street, the bureaucracy, establishment/Chamber of Commerce Republicans, et al.

I really wish I could argue with this, but recent exposure to boots-on-the-ground issues suggests…yeah, they really do.

True, but I could never understand this. I was a child in the ’60s (but not OF the ’60s, I was too young). I had many elderly neighbors, and as they passed I could not help but feel the loss. I would never again hear their stories of runaway horses, of the Great War and all that which came later, of their work in foundry or farm, of their deprivations and sacrifices, of their sight of their first automobile or airplane. If they disdain all that then they are the greatest fools the world has yet seen.

Liberals and the devil have much in common, a totally self-destruction way of thinking. To follow them is to go to hell.

Now I’m curious what happened, Foxfier. I knew it when, multiple times in debate, if this came up, leftist would reply “how dare you!” rather than ever explain to me what they loved about America. If you COULD get one to explain, it was always about what America could be. I think I’ve had 1 exception, unfortunately the patriotic left is being shoved to the right by their more extreme fellow travelers.

Nate-
I have family in Portland, for starters, and then there’s stuff like the gun shop vandalized up in our area of Washington just after we moved, and stuff like the gloating about the hurricane in Texas like only evil people are being harmed, and…. just ugh.

Such a good comment TomD
Disdaining our grandparents, disdaining the people and the struggles and triumphs of our history. A most terrible loss of memory- fatal to culture and to civilization.

I can somewhat understand “hating” America in the sense that it fails to live up to its promise in many respects, but then, what doesn’t fail to live up to its promise when human beings are involved? “Hate” is also a bit strong, it really should be more “disappointed,” like most sane Catholics are disappointed with the Jesuits. Unfortunately the truly “disappointed” Left are few and far between. It really is hatred for a large portion of them, a lot of it based on ignorance and stupidity, and frankly, not really having to suffer directly the consequences of their preferred policy choices.
