PopeWatch: Anti-Catholicism

Robert Royal at The Catholic Thing notes that anti-Catholicism is on the rise:

But anti-Catholicism did not and still has not gone away: witness the outrageous grilling of Notre Dame law professor Amy Coney Barrett last week in a Senate judiciary hearing by Dianne Feinstein, Al Franken, and Dick Durbin.

I will pass over the slimy details, which you may read here, except to say that “orthodox Catholic” may be about to become a political term for someone whose religious beliefs disqualify him or her from public office. Perhaps even make them unwelcome in polite society.

You can’t be surprised that the Democrats – even the nominally Catholic Durbin – attacked. They are wedded to the belief that contraception, abortion, gay marriage, transgender rights (even for very young children) not only define our “deepest values” as Americans, but must be embraced by any faith that wishes to remain a respectable presence in American society.

Go here to read the rest.

In 2012 the Pope Emeritus warned of a rising threat to American religious liberty:

One of the most memorable aspects of my Pastoral Visit to the United States was the opportunity it afforded me to reflect on America’s historical experience of religious freedom, and specifically the relationship between religion and culture. At the heart of every culture, whether perceived or not, is a consensus about the nature of reality and the moral good, and thus about the conditions for human flourishing. In America, that consensus, as enshrined in your nation’s founding documents, was grounded in a worldview shaped not only by faith but a commitment to certain ethical principles deriving from nature and nature’s God. Today that consensus has eroded significantly in the face of powerful new cultural currents which are not only directly opposed to core moral teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition, but increasingly hostile to Christianity as such.

And Pope Francis?  PopeWatch is simply grateful that he is not cheering on the anti-Catholic bigots–yet.

I don’t know Don.

Shea is pretty sure he knows the REAL source of anti-catholicism…

It’s starting to remind me of:

Trying to imagine how well her speech would of went over if Amy Barrett was a practicing Muslim. My guess is that Feinstein would of been escorted out of the inquiry immediately.

But an orthodox Catholic?

That’s open season!
Burn her at the stake while your at it.

The “dogma” of liberalism is fine however…
Just ask the 58 million dead Innocents.

A fair characterization of Durbin might be ‘useless careerist’ and that of Franken as ‘lout’. These sorts of performances are no surprise from either one. Feinstein’s the disappointment here; she usually begs off the worst of whatever the Democratic Party is promoting at the moment. (While we’re at it, why did a fabulously wealthy woman with homes in the Bay Area and a life expectancy just north of 9 years decide in 2012 that she’d like to spend 6 of them shlepping around Congress? Her daughter‘s retired).

Now, to the man who let it all happen, the committee chairman, Charles Grassley, about whom there are two questions: (1) in a Senate chock-a-block with lawyers, why was the chair of the Judiciary committee allocated to a layman? and (2) exactly what’s the use of the Chairmanship and the Republican caucus anyway if this line of questioning is allowed to continue? Was it really Grassley’s view that you just give ’em the rope or is pusillanimity his SOP? (Were it Orrin Hatch, the answer would certainly be the latter).

No other members are calling the bigots out because the guys who’d need to report it, for there to be a price, agree with the bigots.

Gotta get alternative media a little big stronger, sadly– a whole lot of people still trust the mainstream media.

Why is it that when it comes to policy issues on social justice, the common good and peace at any price the godlessly wicked Democrats invoke Church teaching, but when it comes to murdering pre-born babies and sanctifying the sterile sexual filth of sodomy and lesbianism, the Democrats insist on not letting one’s Catholic faith inform one’s judgment and decisions?

I am convinced that the Democrat Party must be disbanded and destroyed as a political fixture in American affairs. I write that without any great love for the Republican Party, but by far while Republicans are inept and hypocritical and spineless, Democrats are downright evil.

Denying Amy Coney Barrett’s informed consent and freedom of her sovereign personhood to respond to the gift of Faith from God, Dick Durbin, Dianne Feinstein and Al Franken, imposed conformity to their belief on the sovereign personhood, on the citizenship of Amy Coney Barrett, tyranny over the mind of man.
How can a sovereign person act in the personification of perfect Justice if their sovereignty is abolished?

LQC, none of that will happen until 1) Row is overturned (can’t legally see how, but it’s true) or 2) the biggest calamity in history is visited upon us.

Libs are rightly terrified.

President Trump will appoint hundreds of federal judges that don’t believe all that liberal crap; and will render decisions based on the Constitution and the law not on idiot leftist chimeras.

Catholics need not apply.

One gets the feeling the left is finally rounding up the range cattle for corralling and slaughter. I suspect they are looking to bring the Catholic cattle in with their tongues already cut out, less the owner on high hear their bleat for help.

I have a slight spin on that T.Shaw. I say we took a bullet and dodged a cannonball,

I want to know who thought it was a good idea to make Mark Shea a commentator on things Catholic.
Our Sunday Visitor employs him. Why is beyond me. Patheos is what it is.
Impossible thing? Mrs. Penguins Fan is not late for something important.

Roe v. Wade never bore the burden of proof that the newly begotten innocent soul of the fertilized egg was not a sovereign person. Personhood is an attribute of the rational human soul of whom life is the catalyst. Benefit of a doubt is what the decision ought to have been in favor of the new life, the new person, the new citizen.
Roe v. Wade is the greatest miscarriage of Justice in America and worse than slavery. The newly begotten innocent person is the standard of Justice for the state and he deserves equal Justice.

The question is: Are Durbin and Feinstein orthodox citizens, real Americans? Next question: Have they read our Founding Principles?
Third question: WHO appointed them chief anti-Catholic interrogators?

This what happens when the Catholic Church doesn’t stand up for itself. It has been co opted by the Democrat Party and can no longer speak forcefully in defense of Catholic doctrine. Bill Bannon seems to be the most stand-up Catholic we got to show.

The ones in the first line are subjective– you can use them to promote what sounds good, they don’t force you to take damaging stands. The ones in the second list are pretty dang objective, and even the various routes of figuring out the best way to reach it involve some very non-diplomatic things.
Probably why there’s so much sudden fighting to make “pro life” mean anything besides opposition to abortion and euthanasia, and to suddenly notice that divorce on demand is an issue when it was “regrettable” but OK for my entire life before.

He’s actually really good on the objective stuff. Or use to be, kind of went off the rails about the same time Andrew Sullivan did, IIRC. Not as explosively, of course.

I want to know who thought it was a good idea to make Mark Shea a commentator on things Catholic.

His first book was published around 1996, I think. He wrote workmanlike and somewhat engaging articles for Crisis back in the day. Notable was that he had Brian St. Paul editing his work. He started blogging around 2002, but did not concern himself much with topical political questions. After 2004, such questions took up more and more of his time and he grew increasingly intemperate and unable to actually discuss anything. There was a time around 2006 when there was a counter-blog maintained by a group who had been banned from Shea’s blog or seen their remarks there deleted en bloc.

The man has an unseemly hostility to people who merely take exception to something he’s said or something in which he has an occult investment. (In my case, his wrath has concerned the advisability of using psychotropic drugs and the sources of the Central American child immivasion of 2015).

just our of curiosity I looked up who the Catholic senators are (who did not remonstrate with Feinstein or Durbin) and was surprised to see Susan Collins of Maine among the Republican Catholics along with Lisa Murkowski- two Worse than Murder supporters. 24 Catholics in the Senate, but the cat has their tongues.
