No, this is not a parody post:
CBS announced Saturday that Patrick Stewart will reprise his iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new “Star Trek” series. It will be streamed on CBS All Access.
The still-unnamed series will explore the “next chapter” of Picard’s life.
Stewart played the Enterprise captain in the TV series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987-94), and in several feature films. He last appeared in the role in the movie “Star Trek: Nemesis” in 2002. Stewart, who will also be an executive producer of the show, described it is an “unexpected but delightful surprise” to reprise the role after, he thought, it had “run its natural course.”
He said it has been “humbling” to hear from fans about how Picard has helped and inspired them.
Go here to read the rest. Stewart is 78. What will the title of the series be: Star Trek: The Dying Generation? In any event it probably will not be quite as terrible as Star Trek: Discovery.
Love Stewart, but I too have to wonder if this is best focusing on him, or moving him to a mentorship role helping out a new generation. Like Boothby towards cadets.
Then again just looking at ST:discovery CBS seems to be where good ideas go to be poorly executed. (and by “executed”, I mean “killed”)
Stewart’s first rodeo was a well-executed reboot, but nothing can really improve on the original. The second suffered more from infection with Gene Roddenberry’s social and political worldview, though you could see some of that in both. Also, the first was built around well-developed characters, of where there were only two in the second (Dr. Pulaski and Data).
@Art Deco – Did you even watch past season 2? By Season 5 they had developed nearly all the cast well. Troi being the only real joke of the series.
Of course it doesn’t hold a candle to DS9 but that was one of that series’ many advantages.
Ah yes, where “Socialism/Communism” that actually “works” in the not to distant future.
The Star Trek series only produces mislead liberals like Miss Ocasio-Cortez into believing that ‘this time’, it will finally work.

The mother-daughter snipe-fest between Lwaxana and Deanna was some good comic relief.
They had good scripts. They didn’t have good characters, bar what Spiner and Muldaur gave them.
Oh, Guinan was satisfactory, it stereotyped.

That was made explicit in the cryonics episode, IIRC.
Star Trek the Next Generation I thought was the weakest of the Treks but I did enjoy Riker, Worf and Q. Data I found ultimately annoying and I disliked the number of holodeck episodes which seemed to become a refuge for anemic writing, along with the large number of alien disease episodes. Whoopie Goldberg has managed the feat of making me dislike every performance of hers I have ever watched. Picard was the most English Frenchman in known history. The series was largely saved for me by the Borg, perhaps the best Star Trek villans after Khan. The Klingons developed from cutout villians into a race of largely honorable warriors, a transformation I found well done but ultimately unconvincing.

Cats garner your attention by going about their business. They don’t have to do tricks to be entertaining.
Cats train their human pets well.
Q was the best part of The Next Generation.
I actually enjoyed some of Enterprise series & DS9.
Ugh, only if you like nails grating on chalkboards. (no offense to Majel, I have the deepest respect for the lady)
Only at first. By shows’ end they had all developed into great characters. Worf the Klingon more Klingon than others. Riker who grew from an arrogant &$#% to a solid leader. Geordi who could connect with machines easier than people.
Seriously? Weaker than the animated series? Enterprise? Discovery???? I mean, how can it be weaker than Voyager which was just the exact same show with a new cast? At the very least they have to be equal.
Strange. I just watched Measure of a Man and thought it must be one of your favorite episodes mixed as it is with court & scifi. Yes Data could be overplayed at times, but so was Spock.
Heh, makers of the show will outright admit that as they were trying to make the Ferengi the big bad of the series at first and… well after that failed, decided to do the Borg next and THAT definitely put TNG on the pop culture map.
Which is a bit of a shame because I think the Romulans actually did more in the series than the Borg did. But it’s like the Dominion and Cardassians – you remember the big splashy villains before the more subtle ones.
Oh and for those Q lovers… did you know he returned in My Little Pony?

There’s also the time in the comics when Q messes with the nuTrek crew. Highly recommended for the sheer fanservice that it is.

The 1st Mrs. Gene Roddenberry could not be reached for comment.
“Seriously?”
Yes. I do not consider Star Trek Discovery to be part of Star Trek. I rank the actual live action Trek series as the original Star Trek, DS9, Enterprise and STTNG. The animated series I actually rank above them all except for the original series.
