Will Rainford, Dean of the School of Social Service at CUA, made the mistake of thinking he lived in a free country and made the above tweet. The enforcers of political correctness at the school were not amused:
President’s Statement on Will Rainford
Dear University Community: Â
Over the past few days I have heard from numerous professors, alumni, and students of the National Catholic School of Social Service who are concerned with a series of tweets written by Dean Will Rainford. The tweets called into question the validity of some accusations of sexual assault made against Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Of deepest concern to me is that they demonstrated a lack of sensitivity to the victim.
The Catholic University of America has no position on the Kavanagh matter. But let there be no doubt that our University, and particularly our National Catholic School of Social Service, has a special concern for every victim and survivor of sexual assault. Â
Rainford’s tweets of the past week are unacceptable. We should expect any opinion he expresses about sexual assault to be thoughtful, constructive, and reflective of the values of Catholic University, particularly in communications from the account handle @NCSSSDean. While it was appropriate for him to apologize and to delete his Twitter and Facebook accounts, this does not excuse the serious lack of judgment and insensitivity of his comments.  Â
Rainford has led the National Catholic Social of Social Service since 2013. It is my desire that he continue to lead the school. But in light of these recent actions I have suspended him as dean for the remainder of this semester. Rainford understands and accepts this decision. Associate Dean Marie Raber has agreed to serve as Acting Dean during that time.
The many letters and phone calls we have received this week have brought up a variety of issues regarding the direction of the school of social work. I have decided to direct a thorough review of these concerns, led by the Office of the Provost. The scope of the review will be to ensure that we have a clear understanding of the concerns, and to identify areas where we hope to see improvement.
I want to reiterate my pride in our School of Social Service. It has been training social workers since 1918. Ours was the third school in the world to offer a Ph.D. in the field — something it first did in 1934. Today it is a top-ranked school with a national reputation for excellence. These are not small accomplishments. I want to thank the entire NCSSS community for their love for and dedication to their alma mater, and for their work as deeply committed professionals who serve the most vulnerable among us in important and life-changing ways.
Sincerely,Â
John Garvey
University President
So let’s get this straight, for pointing out the obvious absurdity of the manifestly fake abuse claim by the pawn of the creepy porn lawyer , a Dean at CUA is suspended for the semester. President John Garvey should really recall that Catholics did not stage the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 which seem to be the model for the current national hysteria.
I’m a supporter of Catholic U., but this statement from the president was a great disappointment. How about just butting out and allowing all, students and faculty to exercise their rights to free speech on their own time?
Makes you wonder what would have happened if he had written a critique of Kavanaugh.
This is why I love momentum stock trading….in which I’m beating the Nasdaq by 2 percentage points year to date. No…I don’t drive a ritzy car… but no one can fire me…and I’ve said many a politically incorrect thing in my day…oi veh. I was thrice censored into silence by the ny times this week and they print a lot of me but I think it varies with the censor one gets at that moment. Others would have printed those three but some in there are dedicated far liberals as in UC Berkeley vintage.
There is no ‘victim’. This woman is a serial con artist (multiple run ins in civil court) and every element of her story screams ‘fake’. Our problem, really, is that you have to scrounge to find a redoubt in the Church or in higher education which isn’t run by the shallow and the stupid.
John Garvey appears to me to be a cringing gutless PC apology of a man.
Her 3 page statement is full of holes. At this point she is an accuser nothing more. She needs to be investigated for perjury. Otherwise she is obviously a voyeur, an accessory many times over, an underage drinker (MD 21, DC 18) and probable illegal drug user.
Since she picked a publicity seeking lawyer to porn stars, my guess is that she is angling for a centerfold gig. If Kris Kardashian can pose in her 50s while not her.
The university president comes across as weak with knee jerk reactions to complaints. Suspending the dean and authorizing a review of the entire School of Social Work over a logical Tweet. Really!!
John Garvey thinks that people are stupid….
Mary, people are stupid.
The government, the state is the new god and politics is the new religion and Dean Will Rainford has become a dissident.
Great catch.
Penguins Fan: Some people are stupid…and some are martyrs.
The Dean was explaining the double standards of the left, which really has no standards. This is America. We have constitutional right of being innocent until proven guilty. Dr. Ford and Cavanaugh are both victims of the Democrat party. Dr. Ford was being used for two months by Diane Feinstein and Cory Booker (who admitted on Friday was in the same room with Feinstein for their political strategy). Democrats could have had all the investigations they need while being anonymous and under confidentiality within the Senate committee two months ago and could have really cared about Dr. Ford. Instead, they used her, they dragged her through the mud, through the scum, and through this big sham. Along with Cavanaugh’s wife and his two daughters. The motive behind this Democrat sham is only for one goal. To keep abortions.
Penguins Fan: On second thought martyrs will confess their stupidity.
I don’t think this article actually quoted the offending tweet, which is confusing. What did the dean say that was so offensive to th lefty snowflakes?
See the top of the post.
Don, I will let you know that if Peral is looking at the post on mobile, the top image may not load. I’ve noticed that a few times.
Garvey was a rank-and-file law professor the bishops hired off of BC. They knew perfectly well (given controversies at BC and given that he had a regular gig at Commonweal) what they were getting. This is who the hierarchy wants running the one institution the Church still controls. Our bishops stink as much as the religious superiors who’ve made Notre Dame what it is today.
