Elizabeth Warren: Native American And Woman of Color

From the Harvard Crimson October 22, 1996:

Law students said they want to learn from a variety of perspectives and approaches to the law.

“A black male from a lower socioeconomic background will approach the study of constitutional law in a different way from a white upper-class male,” Reyes said.

Some students also supported curricular changes, citing the dearth of course offerings in feminist jurisprudence, gender discrimination and sexuality.

“Faculty diversity and curricular diversity go hand in hand,” Reyes said. “The hiring committee loves to hire corporation and tax professors,” who are predominantly “white males.”

Kirkland and Ellis Professor of Law David B. Wilkins ’77 called this statement an “oversimplification” but expressed his support for increased representation of minorities.

“The fact that there never have been Asian Americans, Native Americans, gays, lesbians, Latinos, Latinas and women of color [on the faculty] is a subject of major concern,” said Wilkins, who is black.

Of 71 current Law School professors and assistant professors, 11 are women, five are black, one is Native American and one is Hispanic, said Mike Chmura, spokesperson for the Law School.

Although the conventional wisdom among students and faculty is that the Law School faculty includes no minority women, Chmura said Professor of Law Elizabeth Warren is Native American.

Go here to read the rest.  Well, since she was born in these United States, I guess Warren would qualify as a Native American.  She was also described as  Harvard law school’s first female professor of color in a Fordham Law Review article from 1997.  Go here to read about it.  I guess we can give them that, so long as the color is albino.

More to explorer

  1. Orrin hatch says that if she’s Cherokee Indian then he’s a reptile. (I couldn’t then resist)

    Here’s to old Orrin
    He hatched quite a plot
    To put it to Warren
    And the DNA she’s got
    He told her quite clearly
Bout one chance in a gazillion
    If she’s really an “Injun”
    Then he’s a reptilian

  2. If the Party Of Death [& political stupidity] does not re-run Hillary of the Coven – which is too much to wish for – hope and pray they run Sackajameindian Warren. Guy McClung, Texas

  3. I am sure that, if we all dug deeply enough into our genealogies, we could come up with some “black & ethnic minority” ancestors.

An ancestor of mine, Lt-Col William Linnaeus Gardner (b. 1770) who had served in the 74th Highlanders, in 1809 raised, at Farrukhabad and Mainpuri, the famous cavalry corps known as “Gardner’s Horse.” In 1796, he married Nawab Mah Manzilunnissa Begum Dehlivi, aged 13, a princess of Cambay, afterwards adopted as daughter by Padshah Akbar Shah, Emperor of Delhi. Such an inter-racial marriage was no new thing in the Gardner family; he was descended from Col Jonathan Gale of Fullerswood, Parish of St Elizabeth, Jamaica, who, in 1699, had married a West African slave, Eleanor.

Gardner’s granddaughter, Susan Gardner [Sabia Begum], married Mirza Anjan Shikoh, son of Shahzada Mirza Suleiman Shikoh of the Delhi Imperial Family. He was the grandson of Padshah-e Hind (Emperor of India) Jalal ad-Din Abu´l Mozaffar Mohammad Ali Gauhar Shah Alam II (1759/1788).

On a personal note, as a direct descendant of Sabia Begum, I must have any number of Muslim ancestors of varying degrees of orthodoxy and observance from the first Mughal Emperor, Zahir ud-Din Mohammad (Babur) onwards. Of course, it also makes me a lineal descendant of Genghis Khan, with whom I share a love of horses and a taste for philosophy.

As regards Eleanor, the former slave, her 11th child, Francis married Susannah Hall of Hyde Hall, Trelawney (owner of Hall’s Delight, only silver mine in Jamaica). There is a charming portrait of their daughter, also Susannah, by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

She married Alan Hyde Gardner, Admiral of the Blue and 1st Lord Gardner.

Eleanor’s Great-Great-Great-Great-Granddaughter, Lady Onslow married Lord Halifax and became Vicereine of India (1925-1931)

  4. There’s a new mixed drink being served in Massachusetts, it’s called “The Warren”:
1 teaspoon of fermented agave and 1.34 gallons of milk (1,028 teaspoons).
