Who is St. Floop?

I had the pleasure of working in the Boston area this past week as the Red Sox and Dodgers squared off for the World Series. Since our client was having trouble with some equipment we needed up and running, there was down time which gave me an opportunity to attend daily Mass at the cathedral of St. Paul in Worcester, MA.

During the homily the priest told us of a man who approached him that day with a great moral dilemma. There was a van broken down on the side of the road and as the man approached the van to help the people inside, he notice something very disturbing. One by one, the passengers came out of the van wearing all kinds of L.A. Dodger paraphernalia; he concluded that they must have been driving in from out of town for the Word Series. Being a local Sox fan, the moral dilemma was this: Should he have helped them or not? Of course, the priest then took the opportunity to remind us that we should help anyone in need regardless of race, religion, gender or sports affiliation.

Once back at the hotel which was within walking distance of the cathedral, I notice St. Floop was featured in the hotel elevator. But who is St. Floop? An internet search didn’t help. I finally deduced, through my brilliant powers of observation, that breaking off the “1” and part of the “R”, (albeit vandalism) made have been someone’s way of helping us think holy thoughts!

Litany to Saint Floop

When in danger, when in doubt,
Run in circles,
Scream and Shout.
Saint Floop, Saint of Confusion,
Help us to avoid Contusions.
Amen

Yes, I was stuck on an elevator in BB basement. I, who am claustrophobic. St. Floop did not let me down.

Tisk tisk…..
Saint Floop was born in Providence Rhode Island in 1934 as Phoop Moncier.
At twenty one he designed and constructed the first beach sandal, Phlip Phops, now commonly known as Flip Flops.
On a warm August morning in 1974 while strolling along the shoreline on Cape Cod he spied a flounder, one of unusually large size, dragging an infant off the shore into the deep.
Without any hesitation, St. Floop dropped to his knees and prayed for Divine intervention!
Suddenly, beyond belief, a waterspout formed and sucked the fish and child out of the ocean, casting them both at the feet of St. Floop.

After the death of Phoop Moncier, a woman was praying at his grave for a miracle. That her son, Philip, would find a humorous way to end this silly nonsense of a tall tale, and none would be given. Suddenly a pair of Flip Flops fell out of the sky and landed at the feet of Fr. Molarky, the woman’s priest. The rest is bad history as they say. The Saint is known as being a helper for those with fishing disabilities, bad bunions, ingrown toenails and yes.. athletes foot.

I’m happy that you didn’t take offense to my embellishments, Ben.
I just couldn’t resist the urge to wax poetic… after all, I have fishing disabilities. Just ask my brothers!
