(Rome) The Vatican’s news portal, active since December 2017, VaticanNews, has repeatedly described Pope Francis as the “successor of Christ”.
VaticanNews spokespersons can make a “Freudian” slip. Is such a lapse underlying that which VaticanNews has repeatedly undermined?
The fact is that Vatican News, the Holy See’s news agency, falsely referred to Pope Francis not as the successor to Peter or vicar of Christ on earth, but as the “successor of Christ,” a name previously unknown to the Church and theologically meaning hyperpapism.

Are there nuances in Italian that don’t translate to English? What is the Italian word used for “successor”? Could it also mean “follower”? That’s the only way out of this faux pas that I can see.

The original author of the piece, Giussepe Nardi is a native Italian speaker who well understands the differences and nuances of Italian and this is how he called it.
Avid supporters of Pope Francis who hope that he will change things most often have a dull understanding that Christ Rose from the dead and all is subject to Him. Vague references to “the Spirit”, the meaning of which I hope is to the Holy Spirit, but almost never to the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, who is true God and true Man, begotten not made one in Being with the Father.
It’s all very strange.
“… begotten not made one in Being with the Father.” We have a better translation of that now — quite possibly the greatest outcome of Benedict’s papacy.
