The WeatherVane Never Fails to Disappoint

Senator Elect Romney (R.Ut.) knows who the real enemy is:

It is well known that Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination. After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling. It did not. When he won the election, I hoped he would rise to the occasion. His early appointments of Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Nikki Haley, Gary Cohn, H.R. McMaster, Kelly and Mattis were encouraging. But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office…

I will act as I would with any president, in or out of my party: I will support policies that I believe are in the best interest of the country and my state, and oppose those that are not. I do not intend to comment on every tweet or fault. But I will speak out against significant statements or actions that are divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions.

Go here to read the comments.  It is interesting that Romney had this piece published in the Washington Post, a publication that did its worst to destroy him during his failed run for the White House in 2012.  Throughout his political career Romney has imitated a beaten dog who licks the hands of his abusive master in regard to the tribunes of the Left.  His venom, such as it is, has always been reserved for members of his own party.  Thus his attitude towards Trump, a man he eagerly met with when there was a thought of Romney as Secretary of State, is unsurprising.  Don’t get me wrong, I think that Trump often behaves in foolish and self-destructive ways, but Romney’s  eagerness to preemptively go to war with Trump stands in stark contrast with his willingness to always whip out the “Why Can’t We All Get Along?” card when dealing with Leftists.  I expect little from him in Washington, and I suspect I will be disappointed in that little.

I can’t decide if it’s the “useful” or the “idiot” he best represents in that phrase.

” I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose” to legally disenfranchise every father of his child…to legally murder our constitutional Posterity…to legally eradicate the legal and moral innocents from our midst…to legally impose a corrupt court decision that eliminates the innocent person who is the standard of Justice for government…that the newly begotten sovereign person cannot remain a member of the human race…and without consequence. “Do not mistake God’s patience for His absence.” Deut. 31: 6
“We lied we cheated but we won didn’t we” Harry Reid. What price victory?
I could not understand Romneycare until now.

I listened to Warren’s “Dukakis Tank Moment” on a right-wing talk radio show. How embarrassing!

I reluctantly voted for McCain cause Palin was a conservative n pro lifer. Reluctantly voted for Romney cause he was a successful businessman and the country needed jobs. Also cause he was a family man and prolife. Now he appears to become Sen. McCain reincarnated.
Trump’s reply today outside the W. H. was very measured re Romney’s remarks. It’s up to Romney to be a team player.
The people of Utah voted a Republican to Senate not a dupe of the Democratic Party. He’s pathetic.

Roger Kimball remarks:

I voted for Mitt Romney in 2012. Doubtless he is a nice man. Possibly, Donald Trump is not as nice. But he won in 2016, as Mitt Romney failed to do in 2012. And his tenure has been a litany of achievement in the light of which Mitt Romney’s complaints appear not just churlish and beside the point but slightly rancid and pathetic, not unlike the establishment he embodies.

In fairness, we must admit, if we are being honest, that much of what Romney says is spot on and needs to be said. And yes, the racist, sexist, anti-immigrant stuff is leftist buzz word speak.

But Romney is not the person who should be saying this publicly when you consider a) Romney is the poster boy of everything that is wrong with the GOP establishment in the minds of Trump’s supporters especially. b) Being allowed to be a useful idiot of the left wing media ala John McCain (who himself used the very same left wing media to trash Romney) does further harm.

Conservatives, at least those who aren’t cult like supporters of Trump need to walk and chew bubblegum at the same time on this. They can acknowledge where Romney’s right and rightly call him out for the way he went about this.

Again, the accedes to the moral framing and rhetorical strategies of our political enemies. Nothing Trump has done is ‘destructive to democratic institutions’ and accusing him of it is egregious given what the opposition has been up to, the lawfare artists in particular. ‘Racist’ is a term that has been used so loosely and promiscuously that it means nothing more elevated than an upraised middle-finger even when it’s use is not a component of gamesmanship. ‘Sexist’ never did mean anything; it’s use is and ever has been fraudulent all the way down. And, of course ‘immigrants’ get a lot of diversity Pokemon points. It’s the Democratic Party’s strategy to declare criticism of their mascots off limits (even when they’re quite unself-consciously savaging others. Romney should participate in that.

You’ve got that all wrong. Our Democratic institutions are fine. It’s our Republican institutions that have been undermined. And this is because the Democrats are so much better than are the Republicans at seeding the Federal bureaucracy with people more loyal to their institutions than to our nation. This is why both Democrats and Republicans in Congress act like the Democrats are in charge, irrespective of actual election results.
