PopeWatch: We Sinners

“You have no idea how much nastier I would be if I was not a Catholic. Without supernatural aid I would hardly be a human being.”

Evelyn Waugh

The Pope is wishing people outside the Church again:

“How many times do we see the scandal of those people who go to church and stay there all day or go every day and then live hating others or talking badly about people? This is a scandal – it is better not to go to church: better to live as an atheist,” the pope admonished.

Go here to read the rest.  The Pope often makes statements that would be laughable if uttered by a Freshman during a late night college bull session.  Pointing out the alleged hypocrisy of Christians as an attack on Christianity is a very old game and so completely wrongheaded.  The New Testament demonstrates the grand uses that God has for the most unlikely of human material:  block headed, cowardly, fishermen;   odious tax collectors;  merciless persecutors of the New Way;  prostitutes; Zealots;  Roman centurions, wives of Roman officials, Pharisees, etc.  Christ calls all of poor sinful humanity to His Banner, demanding repentance and amendment of life.  He also understands how weak humanity is and hence gave His priests the power to forgive sin.  Our current Pope seems to want mercy for certain sinners, and out the doors of the Church for others.  PopeWatch prefers, as always, the Way of Christ.

When PF makes a statement like this he seems to be talking about the way he himself acts. I think this is called ‘projection’***

***Psychological projection
Psychological projection is a theory in psychology in which humans defend themselves against their own unconscious impulses or qualities by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others. For example, a person who is habitually intolerant may constantly accuse other people of being intolerant. It incorporates blame shifting.

Other than himself, who is he actually talking about? The man projects just like a typical leftist. Oh yeah, and he’s not remotely Catholic or even Christian. Just be man enough to name your new religion and leave the Church to go pursue it on your own dime.

This reminds me of an intramural discussion in Protestant circles : “I am just a sinner, saved by grace”. Or not just a sinner anymore since now a disciple of the Lord-
Anyway a huge difference between a sinner who is fumbling and stumbling toward God and a sinner who refuses to recognize God.

It is our great blessing to be considered by God and by ourselves to be actually children of God but pope advocates tossing it all in if we still succumb to temptation – might just as well deny God if our behavior could be hypocritical. Once again pope puts shoe on wrong foot. One who struggles with sin needs to cling to God more fiercely- Divorce or disavowal of God is opposite of humility that is needed. Why would anybody recommend to a sinner to just give up. Diabolos

Reverence issues?

* Poking fun at an altar server for keeping his hands together.

* Having difficulty with FFI; The Vatican never brought forward clear allegations, but it was evident that the Franciscans in the Vatican’s Congregation conspired with liberal members of the FFI itself in order to clean the order of all links to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The seminary was closed and the brothers dispersed. A majority of the brothers left and found refuge in the Philippines where they were incardinated. The Vatican’s commissar, Fidenzio Volpi, died in 2015 from a stroke and was replaced by Sabino Ardito. Allegations of fraud against the founder, Fr. Stefano Maria Manelli, were settled by an Italian civil court and Manelli was proven innocent. Yet the order suffered greatly. (Lifesite news reference 2/17)

* Striking out at churchgoers who attend daily Mass by inferring that some are hate mongers. (?)

Strange. It’s those devotees who are still praying for “his” Holiness.
These same hate mongers know very well the difference between sin and sinner. They are contemplatives in action. Prayer first, then actions of mercy for their neighbors.

The “scandal” is that we have a Pope who is confused and has difficulty knowing the difference between sin and sinner.

We hate the former and love the latter.

How much PF yammers on about the hatred in others when he’s in fact perfectly describing himself.

And eternal question of the last nearly 6 years returns: How did we get this Pope?

This is really quite a hurtful statement.

We all fall short of what we were created to be and the essence of God’s mercy is that He wants us to keep trying. It is that relationship that permits us to accept His love and salvation. His Holiness is saying, in essence, “unless you have shed your sin, it is better to abandon your relationship with God. Stop loving him since you cannot live as you ought to.”

That is a horror.

Scandalous activity, dear Pope is front and center in American Catholic identity;
