The thing that sucks is that there is one way in that their ‘different costumes’ approach is helpful– favoring folks from radically different backgrounds, even if they share similar politics, can help identify cultural differences.
That of course gets gutted these days, because having your cultural assumptions challenged is uncomfortable.
50 years ago there were problems. I had to chamption a female graduate student in my research group at Carnegie Tech. There were many in the department who wanted to flunk her out because she was taking time out to bear and raise two kids. I said she could come in at odd hours to do her research and eventually won the department over–she was very intelligent and hard-working. She got her Ph.D. and went on to have a distinguished career.
Michel de Montaigne was asked why young noblemen were often good at horsemanship when they weren’t good at anything else. He said that the horse was the one creature that had no respect for their status and would toss them if they tried to do things the wrong way. Science will prove equally unforgiving to our snotty academicians if they try to ignore its rules in favor of “diversity” or any other nostrum.
Tom, as Benjamin Franklin said long ago:
Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other, and scarce in that; for it is true we may give advice, but we cannot give conduct.
