The Holy See has indicated that pro-LGBT Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta may be appointed as the next head of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., sparking controversy among some Catholic conservatives.
An official announcement could come as early as next week, although Vatican sources have hedged their bets, suggesting to the Catholic News Agency (CNA) that his appointment is “subject to change.”
Gregory will succeed Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who stepped down in the aftermath of last year’s Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report on clergy sexual abuse when it appeared he was continuing a pattern of obfuscation and cover-up.
One Catholic lay group expressed grave “reservations” about about the appointment of Archbishop Gregory as archbishop of Washington.
“We urge the Holy See to seek out a worthy candidate who is without ties to Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, Mr. Theodore McCarrick, or Donald Cardinal Wuerl,” Catholic Laity for Orthodox Bishops and Reform stated in a press release.

Last year, Gregory personally invited pro-gay Vatican adviser Fr. James Martin to give a speech titled “Showing Welcome and Respect in Our Parishes to LGBT Catholics” at both St. Thomas More Parish and at Atlanta’s Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
“During a 2017 visit to Washington, Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the reported next Archbishop of Washington, mentioned his support for James Martin, SJ’s Building a Bridge,” noted one Twitter user. “He called Fr. Martin a wonderful Jesuit and called the book a wonderful book.”
Gregory has permitted the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to act as a center for LGBT events, including LGBT potluck socials and participating in the city’s Pride Parade. Since 2014, he has also allowed the pro-homosexual and pro-transgenderism “Catholic” group, Fortunate and Faithful Families, to hold retreats in his Atlanta Chancery, while personally saying Mass for the group.
The shrine’s pastor, who has shown himself to be at home operating within Atlanta’s gay subculture, was chosen by Archbishop Gregory to serve as a spiritual director for victims of sex abuse for the archdiocese.

I can see why some Catholics have left what they perceive as a dying church. This reads like an epitaph for the Church in America. I’m tired, so tired.

I warned when Cardinal Wuerl stepped down, “Careful what we wish for.” And here we are, with someone who makes Wuerl look like Cardinal Sarah. I am envious of my brothers and sisters across the Potomac in Arlington, although who knows how long they’ll be able to hold out.
Indeed the once Great & Holy Roman Catholic Church is now nothing more than a pile of filth. In the movie “Risen” when “looking” for our Lord, the centurion goes out to a garbage dump of humanity in search for Him then wonders why He is no where to be found. My how history replays itself.
Oh, the Church has had many rough spots in her history and has come through. The Church remains the Bride of Christ in spite the follies and crimes of the mortals currently at the helm of the Church on Earth.

No, the Church(Christ) is not a pile of filth. It is a suffering Church. The sinners within the Church is what you should be calling a pile of filth not Christ

The Church is covered with filth and run by those who wallow in it. But Christ’s Bride is not herself filth, nor can she be.
It’s not may be, Gregory is. Sounds bites from him on healing the diocese in every news break on metro DC radio. Because he’s black, he’s the choice for a predominantly African American city? What about real healing? Apt title for this post.
I don’t imagine St. Augustine’s world was much different from ours in terms of societal upheavals in the 4th and 5th century with Roman civilization collapsing all around the world, Goths, Visigoths and Vandals invading and sacking Rome then invading N. Africa, and the heresies by the handfuls surging through the Catholic Church during his time. It must have looked pretty bad to the Catholics living at the time thinking the end was near and the Christ would soon come. Some how though, I feel that what is happening in our world today and in the Church is unique. I’m not sure how to explain why it seems unique but the the errors being perpetrated in the world seem so much more serious in content than ever before. I imagine all generations feel like that.
Agreed, and the errors seem even more expansive as humanity around us is tested.
I think I’ve come up with a reason I feel things are much more serious today than ever before. In the ancient world and up to very recently people seemed aware of the spiritual world, the immortal world unseen and that God had his hand in the affairs of men. People seemed to be very aware that the world around them and in the universe were awesome to behold that there were mysteries out ‘there’ that were just as real as in the visible world they lived in.
Death, not so long ago in the western world, was very real and not scrubbed by society as to make it unseen by the public. Third world nations know death first hand. Many see it daily. We don’t.
Being saved no longer seems to mean saved by God but by science. Man. God today is placed at the back of the closet with all the other old fashioned items for which we have no use. Today, to a much higher degree than at anytime in our history God is forgotten and the world of today has made us very aware of that.
I seem to recall that Gregory was the Bishop who supervised the production of the John Jay Report, at that time presiding over a Diocese that included the Illinois portion of the St. Louis commuter belt. Didn’t have a bad reputation at that time. What gets you about most of our bishops is that if they did little or nothing, their performance in office would improve.

The Immaculate Conception sublimated herself, body and soul, to God. The LGBT do not, bu t indulge in lowering themselves in disgrace.
If God did not preserve the Blessed Virgin Mary from original sin, concupiscence, and if Mary had not consented to be preserved from original sin at her Immaculate Conception, then Mary could not have given perfectly informed consent to bring the Son of God into the world to be the Son of Man.

“Recently” is about 300 years ago. Do you really sense, Montaigne, Voltaire, Diderot, Beranger were “aware of the spiritual world”?

Very much the exceptions to the rule. The so-call Enlightenment was an inch deep. The Catholic revival in France in the 19th century demonstrated that.
Sorry but Montainge, Voltaire, Diderot and Beranger were what people today would call academic elites. They were not in any way representative of the common man and I thank God for it.

The good Archbishop grew up in our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview Illinois (which was my childhood parish, though I never met him.). Then as now a very upper middle-class parish, by the standards of the time a somewhat liberal parish. I gather that culturally he is suburban upper middle class progressive, not of the mainstream African American culture.
Cardinal Bernadine needed to have an African American as an auxiliary bishop to be politically correct and could not find any who met his usual yes man standard They were the only ones who were worth their ordaining oils..
When the first abuse crisis broke out 1992 be was sent to Belleville Illinois (or possibly sent away) to handle the crisis. When all was said and done 17 o the dioceses 125 priests were on the street. There hasn’t been a case there since 2000.
JPII appointed him Archbishop after he had stood up to the Liberal bishops at meeting of the US bishops conference.
While he will not come near the Pope Watch ideal, we could get much worse, and hopefully repeat his Belleville performance and get rid of actual child abusers.
