In regard to the colored people, there is always more that is benevolent, I perceive, than just, manifested towards us. What I ask for the negro is not benevolence, not pity, not sympathy, but simply justice. The American people have always been anxious to know what they shall do with us… I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are worm-eaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! … And if the negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone! If you see him on his way to school, let him alone, don’t disturb him! If you see him going to the dinner table at a hotel, let him go! If you see him going to the ballot box, let him alone, don’t disturb him! If you see him going into a work-shop, just let him alone, — your interference is doing him positive injury.

  1. I agree with Owens. By all means, any whites out there that are so guilt ridden by something that happened in this country before they were even a twinkle in daddy’s eye, open up your pocket books or check books and send a check to pay for reparations to someone who was not even a slave and is trying to cash in on the sufferings of the real victims of the past. Same with taxes. If you feel the need to raise taxes just realize you have the right and freedom to voluntarily send the government a personal check to help pay for its expenses. No one is stopping you. Just leave me the hell alone.

  2. “When Republicans freed the slaves, this is how Democrats responded”

Although the KKK as an organization dates from the Reconstruction era, the photo posted above looks much more recent, and probably represents either 1) the Klan’s peak of influence in the 1920s, when it was just as much (maybe more) anti-Catholic as anti-anyone-not-white, or 2) the 1960s civil rights movement-era Klan. Both were still predominantly Democrat although the 1920s era Klan had some degree of bipartisan support.

  3. The Klan burned a cross in the yard of my Polish Grandfather after he came to this country as a child. As far as I’m aware, no reparations were ever made or paid. In fact, his family later anglicized their last name to fit in better. As the word slave is actually a derivation of the word “slav”, Poles had a historical knowledge of oppression, something they were keen to escape by coming to this country. The good news is that everything turned out well in the end simply because this is America and opportunity still exists. I guess I’m glad they didn’t have better lobbyists back then.

  4. What might improve the quality of life for blacks in this country can be summarized in a few sentences. Manifest interest in such measures approaches zero on both sides of the color bar. Instead, we get witless diversions such as this. Idiocracy is now.

  5. Permanent-underclass blacks don’t need reparations. They need stable families, morality and personal responsibility. The problem is in content of character not color of skin.

  6. Not many societies are lacking in a visible lumpenproletariat. That in the black population is unusually large (~15% of the total) and unusually violent. Not much you can do about that but deter, punish and incapacitate to contain the trouble they cause. Maybe over x number of generations, the relative size of that class will shrink – in the Keynesian long run, when you and me be dead.

  7. If reparations were made wouldn’t the race hustlers have to be silenced? If the fix has been made how could you continue to complain?

You’re assuming the opposition is something other than egregious. The excuse would be that whitey failed to do such-and-such blah blah.

We’ve just lived through an episode where the response of partisan Democrats to a report from the senescent fellow presiding over the inspector Javerts drawn from their own ranks was simply to brazenly lie and pretend it demonstrated what it explicitly admitted it did not demonstrate (what anyone familiar with the indictments to date knew it would not demonstrate). We live in a mendacious age, and it’s a great deal easier to lie about social processes than it is to lie about discrete incidents.

  9. How about reparations for the Irish? Maybe the Polish, too? And the Japanese, surely the Japanese? Let each aggrieved group come forward. And let all the guilty come forward. When the guilty make their offer negotiations can begin. Such an easy fix. Hard to see why this is even an issue.

  10. When these Black leaders demand reparations for the systematic taking of little black lives by Planned Parenthood (with the full cooperation of black women) I’ll pay attention.
