Brothers Under the Hood

David French at National Review Online recalls the anti-masking laws that were used to fight a prior group that served as a terrorist arm of the Democrat party:

I’d urge everyone to read my colleague Jim Geraghty’s post on the thuggery this weekend in Portland. It was appalling to watch masked Antifa thugs attack Andy Ngo, and it was also appalling that the police weren’t immediately present to arrest his attackers. Antifa’s propensity to violence is well known, and while I’d love to hear a sympathetic explanation for the absence of police, the lack of response looks a lot like a dereliction of duty.

There is, however, a simple and well-known legal reform that will go a long way towards deterring Antifa violence — even when police aren’t close by, but iPhones are. It’s called an anti-masking law. They’ve long existed in the South as a check on Klan violence, and they not only make it easier for police to immediately identify and arrest criminals, they also allow witnesses to preserve the pictures and videos of violent attackers for later criminal or civil action.

When I tweeted over the weekend in support of an anti-masking ordinance in Oregon, a number of correspondents asked me if the laws were consistent with First Amendment protections for anonymous speech. The answer is generally (though not always) yes, and there’s relatively recent on-point case law in the Second Circuit saying so. While court of appeals cases aren’t nationally dispositive, the panel in Church of the American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan v. Kerik included Sonia Sotomayor, and its reasoning is instructive.

Go here to read the rest.  A rico suit against all Antifa groups would also be a good start.  If the Portland authorities are in league with Antifa, time for the President to federalize the Oregon National Guard and impose martial law in Portland.  The Constitution mandates that the Federal government will ensure to each state a Republican government, and this type of mob rule, with a wink and a nod from the Portland city government, is not in any sense a Republican government.

It’s sad that the people who beat Ngo are getting away with this.

Pity the poor beat cop in Portland: not only does your typical antifa thug not respect him, but now he doesn’t gear him. And to make matters worse, your ordinary, law abiding citizen knows he can’t count on the police to keep the peace, so he doesn’t respect him either.

Antifa is a branch of the Democrat Party and a favorite of the MSM. Portland is a Democrat paradise. Best to stay away.

And, by the way my guess is Pope Francis is an Antifa supporter, too.

French has a juvenile hall monitor’s response: we need an anti-masking law. (1) Democratic legislatures would have to enact such a law and (2) police forces who report to creatures like the current mayor of Portland would have to enforce it and (3) public prosecutors in Democratic latrines would have to establish impartial standards for enforcing public order offenses. Police in Alabama took the piss out of a bunch of antifa by telling them to take their masks off per state law or they would be led away in cuffs. Adults are still in charge in Alabama; they aren’t in Oregon and that’s the whole point.

Britain has had a ‘conservative’ government since 2010. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

Great job illustrating the difference between the Klan and “Klan”-tifa.
One is magnified in size by the media/democrats as a focus of disdain.
The other is loved and promoted by the media/democrats.

Enforcing the anti-KKK laws about walking around wearing a mask have been effective against Antifa in every place it’s been tried.

…I am now wondering how long this has been in planning, because about ten years ago there started to be a big hissy fit about laws that “spoiled” Halloween by not letting adults wear masks.

I’d like to see his lawyers go after the city; not sure if that’s possible.

Only in modern. dystopian America would liberals avoid discussing the videotaped beating of an Asian homosexual. Normally CNN would provide around the clock coverage of candlelit vigils for “I’m a gay man and I don’t feel safe walking the streets of my city”.

” If the Portland authorities are in league with Antifa, time for the President to federalize the Oregon National Guard and impose martial law in Portland.”

It would probably be better for Federal Marshals to be sent in, with the Federalized Guard in a support role. Also, activate any state or local police in the Guard, perhaps some are not happy with the situation and under that situation would be willing to spill the beans

“I think there is enough there for a potential 1983 violation of civil rights action against Portland. Discovery would probably reap a bountiful harvest of contacts between city officials and Antifa.”
Excellent idea!
