The Peoria diocese wins its fight to have the body of Bishop Sheen buried in his home turf and this is announced:
Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen will be beatified after the Vatican announced today that Pope Francis had approved a miracle attributed to his intercession.
In a statement, the Vatican said the Holy Father had authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate a decree regarding:
“- the miracle attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God Fulton Sheen, titular archbishop of Newport, former bishop of Rochester; born on 8 May 1895 in El Paso, Illinois, United States of America, and died on 9 December 1979 in New York, United States of America.”
The popular author and Emmy award-winning televangelist, whose program, Life is Worth Living, was broadcast from 1951 to 1957, was declared Venerable by Benedict XVI in 2012 after it was recognised the archbishop had heroically lived Christian virtues.
The miracle attributed to Venerable Sheen’s intercession relates to James Fulton Engstrom who was found to be stillborn on Sept. 16, 2010. During delivery, James’ umbilical cord became knotted, causing him to be cut off from oxygen and nutrients.
Go here to read the rest. Bishop Sheen in his prime preached the Truth fearlessly and entertainingly. We have had little of both in the Church for the past half century. May Bishop Sheen aid us to reverse this.
What’s sad is Cardinal Dolin spent a million dollars to keep Sheen in New York.
Off topic: the story of Vincent Lambert. Side bar on the link for more info on the Fulton Sheen miracle. Final Court ruling on removing nutrients from Lambert appears to be another Terri Schiavo case. His Catholic parents are against his murder, but his wife and most, but not all, of his 8 siblings are for condemning him to an awful death..
Meanwhile a Jeanne Bergeron noted million $ spent by the cardinal. For what? Income from the gift shop at a proposed Sheen shrine.?
My parents watched the Fulton Sheen show and listened to his talks. The record is probably still in my parents’ basement along with McArthur’s “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away” address to Congress.
Eh, who knows on motivation, I’m just glad he’s finally going to be recognized.
His show is on Amazon, too, for download; several websites elsewhere have it, too.
Peoria is not an archdiocese.
As one who has performs in front of audiences, I appreciate a good stage presence. Archbishop Sheen had stage presence in spades.
Any singer, comedian, or speaker could learn a lot about stage presence watching old Fulton Sheen shows.
Correct. Correction made. Peoria has ordained more priests some years than Chicago, but Chicago is an archdiocese and Peoria is not. Yet.
To Jeanne B. & Greg M.
Thank you both.
Very well said.
Jeanne. Shame on Dolan. Might be sipping a bit too much Jameson.
Greg.
Stage presentation was beyond performance. It was as close to Divine as any televised broadcast could ever come to be. The Spirit was so strong with his strong mind and heart that he was able to deliver without teleprompters or physical aids.
He IS incredibly gifted.
Still working on souls. Like St. Kolbe, he will be helping God convert sinners for many decades to come…imho.
His youtube’d show helped get my husband confirmed.
Foxfier.
The Archbishop radiated a brilliant combination that attracted and still attracts; Truth, Enthusiasm and Humor.
God bless your husband.
Caught with the help of a true fisher of men, Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Amen!
My favorite quote is about the difference between baloney and Blarney, I am probably gonna have to make a post about it…..
Just have to share. We probably all have what we think is AB Sheen’s finest talks but I remember growing up and my mom & dad listening to these on cassette tapes. I was stoked when I found they finally made a cd version of…drumroll…”Renewal and Reconciliation, A Retreat for the Priest of WA D.C.” Personal favorite

IIRC it is said that Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen did about thirty hours of preparation for every twenty-seven minute show.
