Left wing movements tend to continually move to the Left until a Thermidor reaction occurs. The Thermidor reaction may occur for the Democrats if Trump crushes them next year at the polls. Or not. McGovern’s debacle in 1972 did little to stop the move to the Left of the Democrats in Congress, although Jimmy Carter was the candidate for the Democrats in 1976. The problem for the Democrats is that their moderate wing no longer exists. If Speaker of the House Pelosi is now considered to be a Democrat moderate, we have a party that is moving into a stage of political development on the Left hitherto unknown in the American political mainstream, at least since the heyday of the American socialist party almost a century ago when Eugene V. Debs got 900,000 votes for President in the election of 1920. That this move to the Left also embraces the toxic politics of race makes for an explosive combination. Turbulent times ahead.
