Shea v. Shea

“He was a foe without hate; a friend without treachery; a soldier without cruelty; a victor without oppression, and a victim without murmuring. He was a public officer without vices; a private citizen without wrong; a neighbor without reproach; a Christian without hypocrisy, and a man without guile. He was a Caesar, without his ambition; Frederick, without his tyranny; Napoleon, without his selfishness, and Washington, without his reward.”

Benjamin Harvey Hill on Robert E. Lee

Shea 2008:

I love local patriots. I always loved Robert E. Lee because when he said he could not lift his sword against his country, he meant Virginia, not America.

Go here to read the rest.

Shea 2019:

When the subject is Confederate statuary, the Christianist goes all drippy and sobby over the loss of our precious, precious heritage. When people march under the banner of the swastika to defend that heritage, we are instructed that we need to make careful distinctions between the neo-Nazis and the “very fine people” who are merely there because they Care About History. Admittedly, they don’t care about the part of history that reminds us that the statues were put there in order to enforce Jim Crow and remind a subject population of their place, but still, it’s just so important to preserve our memories of the Confederacy because of… ummmm, state’s rights! Yeah, that it! That’s the ticket!

Go here to read the rest.  Now that Shea, the Eternal Convert, has converted to the First Church of Leftism, I am curious when he will arraign his past self on charges of heresy.

In regard to the doctrine of States Rights, the Civil War was all about slavery, but States Rights had been an issue for the South since before the Nullification Crisis of 1832.  Confederate General States Rights Gist, who was killed at the battle of Franklin in 1864, was born in 1831, his first name indicating the fervor that some Southerners attached to the concept.  Confederate General Patrick Cleburne, in his tragically rejected proposal to emancipate the slaves and enlist them in the Confederate Army, touched upon Southern fears of the growth of Federal power:

It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all.  Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all our enemies are fighting for.  It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties.

As readers of this blog know, I am Abe Lincoln’s biggest fan on the internet and my sentiments are always with the boys in blue during the Late Unpleasantness.  However, junk history is being used to whip up race hatred in an attempt to benefit the Democrats next year and that is appalling.  Mark Shea, back when he was sane, would have agreed with me.

For Mark Shea:

USS Robert W Lee SSBN-601
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Robert_E.Lee(SSBN-601)

16 missiles with mulitiple independent targeted vehicles each with a few score kilotons of Plutonium-239.

The best of all worlds: Confederate General, nuclear propulsion, nuclear weapons, death from below for the communists.

Maybe now he’ll have an epileptic fit. Ha! Ha! Ha!

More likely his new “allies” will condemn him for what he said in the past. 👿

Mark-who and the woke, chattering classes aren’t tearing down Lee. They’re trashing America.

Not one of them is worthy of carrying Lee’s dirty laundry.

Sin makes you stupid. Well, Mark should know. Calumny made him crazy.

Yep, that’s about right. He has made it clear that saying America’s problems have to do with our relationship to God instead of failing to support the policies of the Left is mere mumbo jumbo; he has cheered a high profile feminist who renounced her Christian upbringing and said she would find God wherever – temple, church, mosque, synagogue or nowhere; he has declared the Democrats and their policies the closest thing to the Gospel in politics; he has dismissed infanticide as a topic too complex to get into; he routinely ignores wrongdoing on the part of the Left, even attacking those who bring it up; he constantly engages in spreading misinformation, calumny, and personal attacks, and he essentially calls evil almost everything he once called good, and good what he once called evil. That his profile continues to increase in all of this is the only thing worse than the obvious problems at hand.

I don’t think it has. Most Catholic commentary on the net regards him now as deranged.

Because of the efforts folks make to let folks know about stuff like this, honestly.

I get tired of it, but it is damage containment.

“He still gets speaking gigs, but largely due to the fact that most people do not keep track of his ravings on the internet.”

That’s what I meant. Not on the internet, but that he gets speaking gigs (including Catholic colleges), has been picked up by Catholic publications, and has gotten a weekly radio show. I have no idea how he stands on the Internet. From what I can tell, most (not all, most) of his regulars on his blog at least are not Christian at all. But in the real world, he seems to be doing better than he was. Or at least compared to years ago when I was first reading him.

News flash. Soi-disant Catholic institutions are commonly a scandal. And, in the last 15 years, there have been efforts, one imposed by a diocesan bishop, to ruin institutions which weren’t scandalous. (The University of Dallas was one, Franciscan University of Steubenville has been another in recent years. Not sure how those battles are going).

The demographic collapse of the religious orders has made the maintenance of satisfactory educational institutions a challenge. What amazes is how little effort is expended into assuring that the legacy institutions are not directly harmful. Keeping the gay lobby out of your school shouldn’t be an onerous task; there was no such thing in the thoroughly secular suburban high school I attended forty years ago. But the diocesan high school in Charlotte, NC couldn’t manage it; the linchpin was the school’s religion teacher.

In Indianapolis the Bishop pulled the Catholic standing o a Jesuit high school because of a gay “married” teacher. Read yesterday that the Vatican has temporarily halted that. Isn’t that just grand.

It’s too soon to say.

Important context is to be found here.

Bottom line: This is likely to be a long, drawn out process, and the Congregation for Catholic Education has decided to err on the side of the spiritual welfare of the students at Brebeuf by allowing access to the sacraments.

The cynic in me can’t help but note however, that if the spiritual welfare of their children were the foremost concern of the tuition paying parents of Brebeuf, enough of them would have unenrolled to have forced the administration’s hand.
