Snagging THAT so fast your head will spin…. have all the kids studying Japanese right now, with Duolingo. Not as impressive as it sounds, but they seem to be having fun and are better at the squiggles than I am.
My strongest interest in foreign countries not named England, Ireland or Scotland, Foxfier, has always been Spain, but next in line is Japan. Their history has been strikingly different from most nations, with a culture that is a world unto itself. Good choice for your kids to study.

A big part of why we think it’s worth a much longer, harder look is that they are an honorable culture, an almost Christian culture, that in living memory very much did not consider all humans to be people.
Plus my husband and I are just fascinated by the stories and a lot of their media, of which a lot has become more Christian than Christian media. ^.^

It’s lying with statistics, Mary, although dang is it a very very common statement/belief/argument.
First the facts, although these are from their reports and there’s quite a bit of scandal attached to how often they go to deliver an award for someone being the oldest in their province and they’ve been dead for years but someone is still collecting their retirement checks. (the “best” one I heard it happened three in a row)
They’re still some 20% under age 25.
The breakdown is like this:
0-14 years: 12.71% (male 8,251,336 /female 7,787,234)

For my guess of why that happened… national personality.
When our culture went insane and demanded that women be both men and women, we had some folks that broke themselves doing it, and our culture has a lot more ‘give’ for failure, and we have an established respect for the individual going “no, society, you are wrong.”
Japan doesn’t have that give, it doesn’t have allowance for failure, and it didn’t have much room for the “no, you are wrong” option to Society. So women mostly didn’t get married, and I don’t want to think about what their suicide rate was like, and for **** sure you didn’t have more kids than you could handle while being insanely awesome at work and at home.
Going off of what their children and young adults watch? They are making a path for “no, you are WRONG” to culture (notably, Naruto; it’s a very strong mix of both the classic, and the guy who is a failure flatly refusing to BE a failure, and when stuff is wrong– he does what’s right; it also is basically made of the “if you beat someone, and they’re willing to be friends– then you’re friends, yay!” storyline; also known as defeat for redemption. It’s a much healthier way to deal with conflict than vendettas, or killing yourself after defeat.)

Japanese women commit suicide far less often than do Japanese men. Source: Stastista. This too is a Japanese parallel with America.

they’ve only been keeping stats since ’78, though, and that link doesn’t actually break down to the female rate. Not sure if they have taboos on reporting it there, for that matter….
Finally found one– they’re about 4% more likely to suicide than women in the US; Japanese men are about three and a half percent more likely than guys in the US.
