Holy Innocents

A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel bewailing her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

Matthew 2:18

Something for the weekend. What Wondrous Love is This seems like an appropriate hymn for today.

The lyrics were first published in 1811 during the Second Great Awakening, a huge religious revival that swept  the nation.  The hymn was written either by that most prolific song writer Anonymous or by Alexander Means, the historical record is unclear.  The tune comes from that hit of 1701, The Ballad of Captain Kidd.

Few hymns are better than this one in powerfully, and simply, conveying the eternal truth of Christianity:  God, the great I AM, became one of us, walked and taught among us, and died for us.

Herod’s murder of the Holy Innocents is remembered on this feast day of the Holy Innocents.  The video below is a moving depiction of this horrendous crime from the film Jesus of Nazareth.

Herod ordered this massacre in a futile attempt to stop the Light of the World from completing His mission of salvation.  In our day Holy Innocents are slaughtered each and every day in an ultimately futile attempt to deny what Christ taught:  that we are all brothers and sisters and that we must love God and love one another.  Some day this modern Herod emulation that goes by the name of legal abortion will cease, and the feast day of the Holy Innocents is a very good day for us to resolve to work unceasingly to bring that day closer.

THEY scarcely waked before they slept,

 They scarcely wept before they laughed;

They drank indeed death’s bitter draught,

But all its bitterest dregs were kept

And drained by Mothers while they wept.

From Heaven the speechless Infants speak:

Weep not (they say), our Mothers dear,

For swords nor sorrows come not here.

Now we are strong who were so weak,

And all is ours we could not seek.

We bloom among the blooming flowers,

We sing among the singing birds;

Wisdom we have who wanted words:

here morning knows not evening hours,

All’s rainbow here without the showers.

And softer than our Mother’s breast,

And closer than our Mother’s arm,

Is here the Love that keeps us warm

And broods above our happy next.

Dear Mothers, come: for Heaven is best.

No choice – no life.
The Holy Innocent’s died because of fear. Herod’s fear. It lives on today with the lie; “Pro-Child Pro-Choice or Pro- Family Pro-Choice.”

The popular Pro-Choice folks are full of fear…the wrong fear.
If they only feared God.

Herod wallowed in his power over life and death, yet he could not add one second to his own life.

No Mass today at our church so thank you for the reminder of this feast day. The slaughter of the innocents continues and is big business.

God bless President Trump.
A struggling king of sorts.
Keeping his word to his constituents regardless of the heat. Condemned by both parties at the start…now a party trying to solidify behind him, not because he is loved..but because he is hated.

Trump isn’t afraid.
The opposite of Harrod, Trump seeks the innocent to protect them, to help their mothers and the world.
Helping to give both child and mother a future.
“One who saves a life saves the world” as the ancient saying goes.
As for us and wayward kings,
God and sinners reconciled.
God. You see with perfect vision.
Bless and keep the President.
Warts and all.
Heart and all.
All for the turn to the innocents.

Protection of the innocents is loving the world in a way that global climate change mongers, Milinda and Bill Gates and the UN can not fathom, because the Truth is a child laying in a manger. Because every human life is Sacred…especially at the beginning of life. Because killing children, unwanted or not, is an act against Truth.

Again. Climate change is positive.
It’s a cold heart being warmed by the Light that conquers the darkness.
That’s the Climate change that truly has a lasting impact…eternal.
