California and New York are now on lockdown which means that 20 percent of the nation’s population is sitting at home, unable to go to work, unless their work is deemed essential. I fear that the world’s dumbest billionaire, a/k/a Governor Pritzker, will soon place Illinois on lockdown. I have lived 63 years on this planet and I have never seen anything like this. This is a classic example of the alleged cure being far, far worse than the disease.

You are likely right.
the good news is that this pandemic is on the back side of a roaring economy. If this had happened in 2008 or 2015, the West would be in far worse shape. As it is, my clients have raw materials and cash reserves to weather perhaps a month and the resources to quickly get back to full production if this breaks in that time. After that, it gets increasingly dicey.
1) Never waste a crisis.

How serious is CA’s “lockdown.”? I have a vague and hazy impression that there are so many exceptions as to who is critical that it’s semi-meaningless. Not to mention unenforceable. What are they going to do? Refill the jails and prisons they just emptied?
Give it another week, then there better be data and mitigation plans without killing the patient (economy).

At some point I want to ask what are they even afraid of?
No offense to anybody here (let’s just assume nobody’s older than gen-X) but when I see the stats about how older folks are most affected, part of me can’t help but wonder if a lot of the panic going on is from a lot of Baby Boomers suddenly realizing they’re mortal.
If an overwhelming majority of people still listed their occupation as farmer on the census, which I just received, I would think the panic and crisis we see would be much ameliorated. The panic and fear at present would be puzzling to those people of past ages who had no electricity, drew their water from wells in their yard, and relied on an outdoor toilet. What we regard as necessities would to them be beyond their imagination. I think there may be some merit in the idea that “you ain’t poor if you don’t know it”. This observation made, I cannot get over the feeling that the timing and draconian measures taken in this crisis has a backstory that has yet to be revealed, in addition to the opportunities opened to evildoers.
From my observations Nate, it is older people who tend to be the most skeptical of this entire nonsense.

I am most puzzled over the curfews. Shutting down places that individuals congregate at least connects to the known transmissions but what does a woman walking her dog at 11 PM have to do with anything at all? Some of these rules don’t make sense. For example, no eating in a restaurant… Um… OK… but the line in front of Rita’s Water Ice was fifty or more people long and included kids and teens as well as folks my age and older. So, is there thought behind this stuff? Theoretically, my neighbor and his son can’t finish the decks they have in process (that’s their business) because it is “non-lifesaving.” But, how are they in contact with anyone? They have each other and would be in contact with each other either way. Shutting everything down and quarentining sections like in Italy at least makes sense but a lof ot this just seems not well thought out.
I figure it’s pajama boys and snowflakes among the younger millennial and older gen Z crowd that are feeding the social panic frenzy.
As to the government overreaction, I think it’s a combination of deferring to the medical experts whose only priority appears to be making sure the health care system isn’t overwhelmed, and politicians inate need to look like they know what they’re doing–especially when they don’t have a clue.

Personally I think the best thing we could do to settle everyone down is to dispense with the daily updates on new infections and new deaths. The health professionals and government agency personnel in charge of managing the response need to know that. The public doesn’t, except in a more general way.

Much of it is simply idiocy on stilts Dave. I think the science behind a great deal of it is suspect at best when translated into shutting down a nation with the size and population of the US, and a perfect example of what happens when elected leaders turn public policy over to so-called experts.

Perhaps what’s happening points to the ills of urbanization. In the infected map in PA, it’s the urban counties and suburban ones, those near Philly, Pgh and for the commuters to NY, that are affected . You’ll see no cases (thank God) in those that James Carville described as Alabama between Philly and Pgh.
Someone told me that eventually everybody will suffer Covid 19 and that the government is buying time to build respirators for the sick.

But in fact at this point when we’re well into the famous Farr Curve, according to worldometers.info, the incidence of active diagnosed cv infection is 57 per million in the US. That is per million. The number of deaths is 276 as of an 3/21/2020–in a country of —of course—-326 million.
So, is not Gavin Newsom extravagant when claiming “25 million Californians will become with infected,” and implicitly, severely ill? Where did he get that statistical estimate?
