“Paramour” works …

Also, “homewrecker”.

It truly is “Newspeak” from 1984, where to express this truth is a politically incorrect “thoughtcrime”.

Just another confirmation that the AP prioritizes PC over clarity and truthfulness. I suspect that the AP mandarin that came up with this new guideline did so because of a guilty conscience…

Oh, and “side piece” still works, and has the advantage of being gender-neutral, so as not to offend the delicate sensibilities of those who pretend to care deeply about things like that.

“Kept woman” sounds about right, and allows for the alternative “kept man” as well.

“Paramour” works …a European slant used to make the relationship sound something higher class than what it is because “living in sin” sounds so judgemental.
“Significant Other” polite for shack up.
“Long Time Lover”.
“Kept Woman”, old fashioned.
“Fiancee” used to add some respectability though “Financees” come and go with some “engagements” last only a night or two. Or if “engagement” is long term the “Fiancee” becomes a “Common Law Wife”, depending on the state. Rather low class sounding term.
Not to be sexist there is “Gigolo”, “Kept Man” “My Significant Other” and “Toy Boy”.

When there is adultery involved:
“Adulteress” cuts to the point.
“homewrecker” is the most emotional descriptive as it conjures up abandoned wife and children. Also $$$$ for alimony and child support. It’s expensive keeping up two households.
Again not to be sexist:
“Adulterer”
“The Other Man”
If in Italy it might be the “Late Senior……” as I believe crimes of passion are often committed but also often overlooked.

“Other Woman” is more genteel.
Again not to be sexist if there is adultery involved:
“The Other Man”
Sometimes “Whore” is the most appropriate word to use, as this train of thought reminds me of my dear friend, a Baptist, whose husband had rented an apartment for is mistress and moved in with her. When their oldest 20 y.o. son came home for Thanksgiving holiday, he asked, ” Mom, where’s Dad?” Answer, “Your father is not here. He has brought sin into our marriage. He is an adulterer and living with his concubine.” Another time at a funeral reception an admiral’s wife said to my friend, “J….., Good to see that you are feeling better. We missed you at the annual Surface Warfare Party. We ran into D…., with your friend. She seemed nice.” Answer, ” My friend? You mean his WHORE!” Silence and the admiral’s wife suddenly needed a fresh cup of coffee. After much heart ache, prayer and counseling J and D reconciled and are still married..

It reminds me of the style guides for my wife when she worked for an educational publisher. You had those styles that were mandated, such as making sure X % of various ethnic or gender groups were represented in examples (if you said “John or Jane did thus and such” then you had to make sure there was an Abdul or a Jose to balance it). But there was also a long list of ‘suggestions.’ My favorite, beyond renaming the Founding Fathers as Founders (non sexist term), was calling it a ‘Halloween Lantern’ rather than a ‘Jack o’ Lantern’ (again, male name, possible sexist). And these were the ones publishing the books used in our schools.

Please excuse my typos. “side piece” is new one, not exactly affectionate. I’m guessing the guy doesn’t use that term in her presence.

From the standpoint of the former wife of a cheating rat, I vote for “whore”. Worked for me, at the time.

Cam, I would agree that “side piece” shares that same unflattering yet accurately descriptive quality possessed by the terms “whore” and “home wrecker”. And I suspect your guess is correct— someone who is a side piece would resent attention being drawn to the fact, just as a whore or a home wrecker would.

I think it’s curious that the AP is so solicitous of the delicate sensibilities of adulterers.

See Orwell. We live in a time of universal deceit. Telling the truth is a revolutionary act. Evidence: 99% of what you hear, read or see relative to the China Murder Virus.

The only more deceitful things are public schools’ and universities’ mind Clorox.

Let us turn to our urban African-American brethren and adopt the shortest, most-to-the-point noun available: She’s a Ho. 🙂

“I believe the term ‘whore’ is available.”

I’ve been to whores in my submarine sailor days, They are generally more honest than mistresses and less demanding. In fact, quite frankly I saw scores of whores, and only one was dishonest (I had purchased coke from her and it was just sugar powder – never went back to her – that was back in my drinking and drugging days – lesson to be learned: never let a whore be your dope dealer). Other than that lone example, they always give good measure for their hire, doing (as usual) their whorish best, and they never break up with you.

Please, let us not denigrate the status of whoredom with comparisons to a politician’s mistress. Here’s looking at you, Andy Cuomo and Sandra Lee (they broke up in September 2019, but nevertheless…….).
